NEW PUBLIC THEATRE IN XATIVA | Arquitectos Ayala

When this contest was announced, we went up to the Mont Sant, near the old fortress, to see the chosen plot from above. The large avenue called “Alameda” (or “Albereda” as it is called in Xativa) divides the old part of the city from the rest of the town. With a great difference of height between the “Albereda” and the back street (6m.) as the classical theatres were placed, the building was adapted to the different levels of the ground. At the back, there is the building of the music society. Out of the buildings, at different heights, there are public stairs, ramps landscape areas and resting areas as an extension of the coffee shop, from where the people can see part of the old town, the mountains and the old fortress. An Italian type theatre, with 800 seats, layed out in a single stand in such a way that it can be possible to get any seat from any access, from low or high floors. Theatre lovers not only come to see the the play but also to meet other people after and before the spectacle, to enjoy some exhibition in the intervals or just to chat while having a snack in the cafeteria. Because of these reasons, we spent more of our time thinking about the building’s integration with the plot. The work of the preliminary project was to place the buildings in the plot in such a way that they seem to always have been there and also that the way from the higher street to the lower one was natural; descending sections of stairs or ramps where in each flight something different could be done: to sit on a bench to read; to have a soft drink; to chat with some children or some person or, simply, to think and rest enjoying the public garden. Sappevamo come proggetare e costruire un teatro, in questo caso, classico e tradizione ed è per questo che non abbiamo voluto fare sperimentazioni con delle forme ma costruire una gran sala unica senza divisioni spaziali, con un suono il più perfecto possibile e una vissibilità totale all’interno di un edificio umano e confortabile. Pertanto, tutto il nostro tempo è stato usato nell’implantazione dell’edificio nel lotto. Si cercava una posizione degli edifici nel lotto in modo tale che sembrasse di essere stati lì da sempre, e il passagio da una Strada all’altra possa essere fatto in modo naturale, scendendo le scale e le rampe, in cui, in ogni sezione si potesse fare qualcosa di diverso: sedersi su una panchina a leggere, bere qualcosa, chiacchierare con un bambino o un anziano del villaggio o, semplicemente, pensare o rilassarsi nel parco. Possiamo dire che si è fatto un vero teatro all’italiana, con 800 poltrone che si distribuiscono in un’unica gradinata, in modo tale che si possa arrivare ad ogni posto da qualsiasi accesso, dal piano terra oppure dai piani superiori. Gli appassionati del teatro possono sia guardare la rappressentazione, sia restare, interagire con gli altri, vedere qualche mostra o, semplicemente, chiacchierare al bar. All’esterno del lotto, a diversi livelli, si trovano i gradini, le rampe, le terrazze con giardini ecc. Il bar si apre verso l’esterno, da dove si può observare il centro storico, le montagne e la propria ciuttadella. La gran Alameda (o Albareda, come la chiamano a Xátiva) divide il centro storico dal resto della città. Con una gran differenza di quote tra l’Albareda e la Strada in fondo (6m), la gradinata si addatta ai dislivelli del lotto, così come si faceva nei teatri classici. Arrivando fino in fondo si trova l’edificio delle società musicali. Quando si è organizzato questo Concorso, siamo saliti al Mont Sant, vicino l’antica ciuttadella per guardare da lì il lotto. Fin dall’inizio, ci è sembrato che il lotto è stato fatto propio per realizzare un teatro ed è per questo che abbiamo sentito il forte desiderio di costruirlo.
