Fisherman's House | Arquitectos Ayala

In a small hamlet of four inhabitants called Gatariza, which belongs to the village Negradas within the municipality of O Vicedo (Lugo), on the banks of the river Sor, we built, or better refurbished, a small house that had belonged to a fisherman who had just passed away and transformed it into a holiday house. In Galicia, rural houses are distributed with such common sense that it is difficult for any architect to improve on this. We found a house that had on its ground floor the stable on the main façade and the kitchen on the back façade, which was where the house was accessed from. On the upper floor there was a bedroom and a living room above the kitchen. In a corner of the small living room there was a toiled locked up in a kind of cupboard that didn’t have any drainage or plumbing as the human excrements fell directly into the stable where they got mixed with those of the cow. The heat coming from the kitchen and the stable served to heat up the rest of the house. At the top there was a small attic where the fisherman kept his keepsakes. The surface of the whole house was 62m2. Everything had to be refurbished: floors, ceilings, stairs, etc. since everything was made of wood and was destroyed by woodworms. We didn’t change the arrangement, or the height of the ceilings or the staircase. The stable became a dining room and the first floor was divided into a toilet of 2,10m x 1m placed opposite the staircase and two bedrooms. We raised the roof as far as permitted to be able to create a living room with a loggia and a running bench where you can rest, read or meditate looking out on the fields and the river. Neither the bricklayers nor the architect intended this to be an architect’s project, or a technical feat. What propelled us was the love of the place and of the future users, the two youngest of the family, since it is our great ambition that the whole family spend the summer together, and the rest of the children already had their houses. My wife, my children and myself discussed every detail. We drew on small papers in a notebook, sometimes on the notepaper we found in hotels, and sent the pictures of these drawings taken with a mobile phone to the builder. There were never any plans, only small drawings and sketches. The windowed balcony mounted on a large piece of slate that we set in the wall is a Galician balcony, and they, the neighbours, the villagers, recognize it as theirs. The loggia is also Galician and the yellow aluminum frames also come from the area. Almost all the wooden beams were preserved and the ones that were damaged were replaced. We didn’t want to be architects, just people who know the area and its surroundings very well. In the river Sor, next to the house, you can fish seabrass, and further up the river different varieties of trouts. Twenty minutes walk from there is the port of El Barquero, that belongs to La Coruña and we have been fishing in this ria for forty years. For me it is, with Cudillero, the most picturesque port in Galicia and Asturias. This house is situated in the depths of Galicia. We bought it in the midst of the estate craze, fleeing from the thousands and thousands blocks of flats that were destroying the coast. We believe it is a HOUSE and it doesn’t have any further claims, but in our view it doesn’t lack anything nor has it anything that is not necessary. We cannot buy big or small shoes but need shoes that fit us. This is the way the house is, neither big nor small, but just what is necessary for its future users. In un piccolo villaggio di pochi abitanti chiamato Gatariza, appartenente al paesino di Negradas nel Comune di O Vicedo (Lugo, Galizia), sulle sponde del fiume Sor, si è costruito o meglio trasformato una piccola casa appartenuta ad un pescatore locale ormai scomparso, in una casa per le vacanze. In Galizia, le case rurali sono realizzate con un senso comune difficile da superare per un architetto. Ci siamo ritrovati con una casa, che aveva al piano terra la stalla aperta sulla facciata principale e la cucina orientata, invece, verso la facciata posteriore, usata come ingresso principale della casa. Al piano superiore vi era la camera in corrispondenza della cucina, mentre il salone era posto sopra la stalla. Un piccolo angolo del salone era utilizzato come bagno chiuso all'interno di un armadio, che non aveva impianti idrosanitari, perciò le feci cadevano direttamente nella stalla, dove vi erano quelle della mucca. Il calore, emanato dalla cucina e dalla stalla, riscaldava il resto della casa mentre in alto il pescatore conservava i suoi ricordi in una piccola soffitta. La superficie totale della casa era 62m2. É stato necessario rifare pavimenti, soffitti, scale, ecc ... poichè tutto, essendo di legno, era danneggiato dall’aggressione dei tarli. Non si è modificato nulla della distribuzione dei volumi, altezze, o lo sviluppo delle scale. É stata trasformata la stalla in una sala da pranzo, mentre al piano superiore davanti al corpo scala sono stati realizzati il bagno di 2,10 m x 1 m e due camere. É stato alzato di poco il tetto, entro i limiti normativi, per ottenere un salotto con una loggia e una lunga seduta, dove fosse possibile sedersi a riposare, leggere e pensare, osservando la campagna e il fiume. Né gli operai né noi stessi abbiamo lavorato semplicemente ad un progetto di architettura, tanto meno scorrendo un codice tecnico, bensì eravamo legati al luogo e a coloro che in futuro avrebbero usato la casa, i due figli più piccoli, poichè il nostro interesse era di poter passare l'estate insieme, così facendo i ragazzi avrebbero avuto la propria casa. Mia moglie, i miei figli ed io, abbiamo discusso di ogni dettaglio. Disegnavamo in piccoli ritagli di agenda, a volte, sui fogli per annotazioni degli alberghi, e inviavamo tutto al costruttore con fotografie scattate dai cellulari. Non abbiamo fatto mai piani di progetto, solo schizzi e disegni di piccole dimensioni. Il belvedere è diventato un grosso pezzo di ardesia incorporato nel muro. La terrazza con vista panoramica, il belvedere è tipico galiziano, e i vicini del villaggio lo riconoscono come proprio. Anche la loggia è tipica galiziana e la struttura di colore giallo - limone sono frequenti nella zona. È stata conservata quasi tutta la struttura di travetti in legno, sostituendo solo quelli più deteriorati. Non volevamo essere architetti, solo persone che conoscono bene il luogo ed i suoi dintorni. Nel fiume Sor, vicino alla casa, è possibile pescare spigole e più in là trote, anche quelle salmonate. Venti minuti a piedi c’è il porto di El Barquero, appartenente a La Coruna, e da circa quaranta anni peschiamo in questo estuario. Credo che insieme a Cudillero, sia il porto più affascinante della Galizia e delle Asturie. Questa casa è nascosta nel profondo della Galizia; è stata comprata nel pieno della follia immobiliare, scappando dalle migliaia e migliaia di blocchi, che distruggevano la costa. Crediamo sia solo una CASA senza grandi aspirazioni, ma sembra che non manca proprio nulla. Non è possibile acquistare le scarpe un numero più grande o più piccolo, bensì a nostra misura. Questa casa è così, né grande né piccola, solo a misura del suo futuro utilizzo.
