Palenque: a platform, ring, area or the like, used for different forms of entertainment, surrounded by seats for spectators and made with posts or stakes. The definition above is a good one for an entertainment area which is physically, detached from the tirening atmosphere of the Fair. This is a Fair for the XXI century and, therefore the building must be technologically advanced, but at the same time simple in its form and easy and fast to build. This must be a detachable structure, so all its pieces can be assembled together once a place is found for it to remain longer and with the same purpose. Once the structure is removed from the World Fair grounds, only the surface under it, made of plain stone, and the water sheet will remain. On a stone base, one meter above the ground, a great diaphanous porch stands. The porch is shaded by the first floor above and the awning in the patio, and the water falling makes the area cooler. This is a good place for the visitors to rest and even enjoy a show and have something to drink while not having to go into the main show area. It could be an entrance to the latter, a promenade area or even a meeting-point. Above the porch there is a great double height hall, detachable and adaptable to any floor shape, very practical for temporal shows. This half of the building is encloses by metallic sheets, which will possibly be adjustable by computer. The other half of the structure (81 m x 81 m) is a closed, air conditioned space, an auditorium for live shows, projections, laser shows, etc enclosed in a sandwich like structure, made of high quality metal plate. The versatility of the stage is such that it allows for different arrangements depending on the show being exhibited. Shows that can be partly viewed through the glass partition. Two simultaneous shows, one inside and under cover, the other one outside, in the open air, both of them separated by an opaque partition. When the weather is fine, maybe at Seville nights, the awning can be folded away, so enlarging the stage, with the starry night as its background; spectators can be arranged in all possible ways: sitting in tiers, or standing in the porch around small refreshment booths, or standing in the patio, or looking out of the veranda. On top, an open air bar crowns the building, overlooks the city skyline embraced by the river, its towers and reflections, the last memory or the first glance the sailors took. The outer structure, made of white plate, contrasts with the stainless steel handrails and cables. We are reminded of Asplundh’s comment on the hall pavilion at the Stockholm World Fair in 1930: “Rather than just a building, this is a festive and advertising structure, enhanced by colorful flags during the day time and by the lights during the night”. Palenque: (ita, Steccato). Recinto di pali di legno collegati fra loro per chiudere un terreno, un luogo o con qualsiasi altro scopo. Ci sono un paio di strade di effimera durata limitate da “palenques”. Buona definizione per un edificio per mostre e spettacoli che sia separato fisicamente dalla confusione dell’Expo di Siviglia. L’edificio è inevitabilmente tecnologico ma fatto con la massima semplicità e velocità di esecuzione, in cui ogni elemento può essere smontato e rimontato pezzo per pezzo, ancora una volta, in un nuovo sito in cui localizzarlo nuovamente e per lo stesso utilizzo. Il terreno sotto l’edificio, modellato in pietra naturale, è tutto ciò che rimarrà insieme allo specchio d'acqua, quando si deciderà di spostarlo al termine della Grande Esposizione. Un grande portico diafano innalzato da una base in pietra ad un metro di altezza rispetto ai viali della Fiera, sotto l'ombra del primo piano e delle tende da sole del patio, rinfrescato dall’acqua. I visitatori possono rilassarsi protetti dall’architettura e godere, inoltre, di qualche piccola performance artistica accompagnata da un rinfresco senza dover per forza entrare nella parte riservata ai grandi spettacoli, ritrovandosi, così, come in una piazza, punto di partenza di un percorso o meglio una passeggiata verso un successivo luogo d'incontro. Al primo livello un grande foyer a doppia altezza, adattabile a qualsiasi forma di piano rialzato, smontabile e rimovibile, per le mostre temporanee. La chiusura di questa metà dell’edificio si basa su lamelle in metallo, regolabili all’occorrenza elettronicamente. L'altra metà della scatola (81 x 81 m) è un ambiente chiuso (servito da impianti di aria condizionata), un auditorium per tutti i tipi di esibizioni dal vivo, proiezioni o film, laser, … . L’involucro esterno è di tipo sandwich di lamiera metallica liscia di alta qualità. La versatilità dello scenario è tale da permettere eventi interni visibili in parte dall’esterno, attraverso una separazione vetrata, e spettacoli in parallelo, interni/coperti e esterni/aperto, separati da superfici opache. Talvolta con il bel tempo, magari in una notte tipicamente “sevillana”, ripiegate le tende da sole per lasciare spazio al cielo stellato, lo scenario è aperto totalmente attraverso una conformazione a cerchio rotante, attraverso la quale si possono dare tutte le possibili forme allo spazio che accoglie il pubblico; seduti in tribuna o sotto il portico, intorno alle piccole aree ristoro, in piedi nel cortile o appoggiati alla ringhiera, come in un balcone di un gran teatro. Come coronamento, sulla copertura, una terrazza/bar; di fronte la sagoma della città, abbracciata dal fiume, le torri e i loro riflessi. Immagini che furono, per secoli, le ultime impresse nella memoria o le prime che scorgevano della Spagna continentale i viaggiatori d'America. Tutto l’insieme esterno è in metallo, nel colore degli alberi, sospeso sul basamento in pietra e in contrasto con le ringhiere e i cavi in acciaio inox. Ci ritorna in mente la definizione di Asplund del padiglione d'ingresso per l’Expo di Stoccolma del 1930: “Forse, più che un edificio, una struttura necessariamente festosa e pubblicitaria, adornata durante il giorno con il colore delle bandiere e di notte da una forte luce”.
