Architects: RMJM, supported by Sikka Associates Architects and NACO, Netherlands Airport Consultants
Landscape Design: STRATA
Structural Engineering: Benaim
RMJM’s design for the Kolkata Airport reflects the client’s vision for a world-class terminal that
incorporates both cutting-edge technology and the unique cultural qualities.
RMJM won the international design competition for the Terminal on this site in collaboration with the Delhi based architect Sikka. An independent jury selected the design against a notable list of competitors including Aéroports de Paris and HOK. From the onset of the project, RMJM has worked closely with the landscape designers Strata to ensure a close relationship between the building and its landscape. The landscape design revolves around an abstract reference to the writing of Rabindranath Tagore of Bengal. In developing the building’s form and in the detail design of its skin it has been ensured that the facility reaches the highest international standards of sustainability. North facing roof lights and a central courtyard fl oods the interior with natural light. The large front window, is shaded by the overhanging roof, is also a ventilated double wall removing heat generated from sunlight. The roof is designed to harvest rainwater, which is stored and reused for both irrigation and the washrooms.
