In an effort to revitalize the urban space of the city, the Municipality of Athens organized a design competition. One of the most important piece of urban furniture is undoubtedly the bench. Unfortunately, in Greece, hardly anyone is interested in using them. Personally speaking, I believe that the most common of these reasons is the fact that they are uncomfortable for many postures and dirty as well as dark and indiscernible during the night. This proposal is based on the human body. Having studied and analysed the geometry and the movements of our body, I designed six of the most usual ways of “sitting” in the city. Each of these benches can be placed in different “urban environment”. Main objective of this project was to create some pieces of urban furniture which would make every single user, without any hesitation, feeling comfortable and safe in his own city. In other words, it’s an attempt to redefine the public space which belongs to us. I strongly believe that we need to re-use every public space and equipment by all means, especially here in Greece, in order to bring it back to life...
