Startgoed Amsterdam recently has small business units for rent in a very special building at the Transformatorweg in Amsterdam. This former industrial workshop (6900m2) of the water company of Amsterdam is transformed in a remarkable way by CUBE architecten to make it suitable for the establishment of small offices, businesses and work shops. CUBE was involved in this project from the very beginning of planning, and suggested a number of patios in the building to. This made it possible to create small units of 20-50m2 that not only got extra daylight, but also to possibility to step outside for some fresh air. The old industrial workplace of the building was initially dominated by concrete columns, massive concrete girders and windows to the north, in the up to 8 meters high roof. The ground floor was reinforced in the past to a 30cm thick concrete slab to make the workplace suitable for heavy equipment. But technical installations in the building were in no way capable of dealing with the new function the building would get. These are mostly replaced to provide the many units with fresh air, heat, electricity and access to internet and telephony. To keep the units as flexible as possible and to allow units to be easily merged or split, all data and electricity in the units is offered through mobile 'energy columns'. MATERIALS The biggest architectural challenge was to keep the industrial building recognizable as a whole, while dividing the big empty space in little business units. The rugged industrial character of the hall was contrasted by materials that are clearly recognizable and different from the existing concrete. Between the over dimensioned and nearly 4 meters high frames of untreated Irokko wood, are translucent walls. These are built from vertically placed plastic panels in three different versions: opal white, transparent white and transparent matte. The combination of these narrow panels with the high and narrow wooden frames, gives the new form a strong vertical orientation. The contrast in materials and the distinct vertical lines makes the new form stand out from the existing structure. PATIO'S The patios are completely build up of untreated wood. Like the interior frames, the outer frames are made of Irokko wood while the facades above it are made with ‘Stellac’, a thermally modified timber. Almost every unit is connected with the patios through at least 1 door. The patios are thereby also a connection between the various users of the building. Like the colorful coffee corners, the patios are places where people can run in to each other, or join a lunch or informal meetings at the picnic table or sitting rocks. Een werkplaats (6900m2) van het voormalig waterleidingsbedrijf van Amsterdam is op een opmerkelijke manier door CUBE-architecten geschikt gemaakt voor de vestiging van kantoren, bedrijven, ateliers en oefenruimten. CUBE was al vanaf het begin bij het project betrokken en stelde voor een aantal patio’s in het gebouw aan te brengen. Zo konden kleine units van 20-50m2 worden gerealiseerd die naast extra daglicht ook de mogelijkheid kregen ‘even naar buiten te stappen/even een luchtje te scheppen’. HAL De oude industriële hal werd in eerste instantie gedomineerd door leegte, betonnen kolommen, enorme betonnen liggers en de tot 8 meter hoge sheddaken met glas naar het noorden. De vloer van de begane grond was in het verleden verzwaard tot een 30cm dikke betonnen plaat om de werkplaats geschikt te maken voor zwaar materieel. Op geen enkele manier voldeden de installaties in het gebouw aan het nieuwe gebruik. Deze zijn voor het grootste deel vervangen om de vele units te voorzien van verse lucht, warmte ,elektra en toegang tot internet en telefonie. Om de units zo flexibel mogelijk te houden en de mogelijkheid open te laten om units gemakkelijk samen te voegen dan wel op te splitsen, wordt alle data en elektra in de units via verplaatsbare ‘energiezuilen’ aangeboden. MATERIALEN Naast de technische uitwerking was de grootste architectonische uitdaging om de hal als herkenbare eenheid te bewaren, en toch de grote lege ruimte op te delen. Bij het ruige industriële karakter van de hal werd een contrast gezocht door materialen te gebruiken die duidelijk herkenbaar zijn en afwijken van het bestaande beton. Tussen de ruim gedimensioneerde en bijna 4 meter hoge kozijnen van onbehandeld Irokko staan lichtdoorlatende wanden. Deze zijn opgebouwd uit verticaal geplaatste kunststof panelen in drie verschillende uitvoeringen: opaal wit, transparant wit en mat transparant. De combinatie van deze smalle panelen met de smalle hoge houten kozijnen geven de nieuwe invulling een sterk verticaal karakter. Met de materialisering en het verticale lijnenspel is het gelukt de nieuwe invulling duidelijk te onderscheiden van de bestaande structuur.
