The residence, a rectangular three storey building, is situated in a 600m2 lot. The architectural language is Doric. Single and double height semi- outdoor spaces are created by carving into the main volume, in a way following the traditional Hellenic Architecture which is based in the element of “shadow”. Corner window openings are implemented in the design, to enhance and contribute to this language. The main design principles are bioclimatic. Horizontal and vertical transparency allows natural ventilation. Intermediate covered spaces act as a buffering system against direct heating or freezing of the exterior surfaces. A vertical sunshade construction, consisting of wooden planks, gradually evolves to becoming a pergola at the roof garden level. It protects the interior from direct sunlight and provides the necessary support for the two garden spaces, at ground and roof top level, to eventually become one. The architectural design aims to create a dialogue between the striated tectonic language of the shell and the softness of the landscape. This dialogue is enhanced by the use of natural materials. Concrete, casted in natural wooden boards, natural stucco of sandy color and texture, black lava stone, selected as a shadow intensifying material, steel and wood, are materials that age nicely. The house’s ambiance changes throughout the day, following the sun’s movement. Traces of rain on the stucco and concrete porous surfaces and long stripes of light escaping through the wooden shades, remind and welcome the passing of time.
