✔ Design: Our Architect is working on her first Passive House Design project in South West London. It includes a wall as vertical garden, a sedum green roof besides Passive House features - triple glazed windows, thick thermal fabric and Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery System. This project was refurbished by All Done a few years ago. Today we are studying the possibility to adapt the Passive House Design Standard to part of this site. Westow Street is a dynamic low energy home designed for a prestigious private UK client, located in Croydon South London. This contemporary designed energy efficient home is located on a challenging site, constrained by stringent planning restrictions. The design philosophy for this project aims to challenge the conventional strategies of massing and space planning for residential dwellings in London and aims to utilise the planning restrictions as a key element of the design brief, seeking to find spatial efficiency, dynamism and adventure on this unique site. The house consists of three bedrooms, an open plan living dining and kitchen area and two internal courtyards which provide natural light into the centre of the building. The building is to be constructed from an engineered timber frame and prefabricated insulated panels using natural hemp wool and materials of low embodied energy. It utilises rain water recycling and photovoltaic panels are integrated into the roof to provide electricity for the house. The scheme is targeting to be constructed to Passive House Standard. The envelope of the building is clad in FSA certified Larch timber boarding with powder coated timber-aluminium triple glazed windows and fitted out with hardwood and stone flooring and LED low energy lighting with fully integrated media and entertainment systems throughout the house. DAYLIGHT/SUNLIGHT ASSESSMENT This Daylight/Sunlight report has been produced to support the Planning Application of Proposed Development at the land rear of 74 Westow Street, London; SE19 3AF. This report should be read in conjunction with Design & Access Statement and accompanied Drawings. This assessment has been carried out by a qualified professional who has studied Lighting Design (Day light and Artificial Lighting) at Postgraduate level and is competent user of Lighting Design Tools like Autodesk Ecotect Analysis, Relux and Radiance. Aforementioned is also affiliated to BRE and is an accredited assessor of BREEAM Domestic Refurbishment Assessment. Sunlight availability has been calculated with the help of BRE Sunpath Indicator as suggested in “Site Layout Planning for Daylight and Sunlight “. The time of the day and the month at which availability of sunlight is calculated at certain point/surface can be seen on the chart. Sunlight availability is given in percentage probable annual sunlight hours along with the percentage hours of sunlight available in winter through the whole year. Moreover, the other important factors like Overcast Sky Factor and Uniform Sky Factor can also be checked on the Sunpath Indicator. The proposed development has been designed with care so that it has minimum visual impact on its surroundings, achieving as much sunlight hours as possible, considering un-avoidable site constraints and limitations. The sunlight of existing amenity spaces have been well protected and acceptable levels of daylight have been achieved within the proposed development We, at All Done Design and Build Ltd, believe that the ‘Passive House’ and ‘Passive Building’ concept is a simple and practical building solution that addresses energy consumption problems in buildings (not only houses) and are delighted to have the opportunity to become certified in this field. AMAZING FACT: Passive Houses allow for energy savings of up to 90% – yes, 90% – compared with typical European homes
