Straw bale Studios for a Concert Area - "casa in paglia" A new kind of Trulli | Palea Costruiamo Natura
2012 ADREAM competition - shortlist Pouilles / Italy / 2012
21
The project includes a series of studios to the service of a new outdoor arena for concerts and events near Bari, Italy. The project is the first example of sustainable architecture made in wood and straw bales for the Mediterranean climate and in particular for the Southern Italy. The use of straw bales and cellulose fiber, as thermal insulation, guarantees an optimal indoor climate both in winter and summer.
The materials used are completely locally available. Thus they do not need to be imported from long distances, decreasing the impact on the environment. Furthermore, the module has been designed in order to be disassembled at the end of its life cycle. Also the substructures can be totally removed because they are realized with an innovative method: big screws that can be removed at the end-life of the structure.
Thus every module can be expanded or aggregated with other ones. The shape of the module refers to the typical Apulian trulli - a vernacular architecture - even though it has been revised taking into account the thermal parameters and the regulation that a new project has to meet.
