Tepoztlán Lounge | cadaval & solà-morales

Tepoztlan, is a small town nestled between rocky cliffs located to the south of Mexico City, 50 kilometers away from the vibrant metropolis. With its well preserved historic center and wild countryside, Tepoztlan is a town of legends and deep cultural roots that has been appreciated by writers, poets, artists and musicians over many decades, turning it into their hometown or weekend retreat. Located in this incredible context and surrounded by an astonishing landscape, the Tepoztlan Lounge is the first building completed of a larger project that also includes a series of bungalows of different sizes and designs, which can be rented by years, months or days. The lounge is set to be a central communal space for leisure in nature, and is located in the perimeter of an incredible lawn; the idiosyncrasy of the project relies on enabling the experience of the carefully manicured lawn while promoting the experience of the wild nature existing in the boundaries of this central space. The project is a negotiation between interior and exterior, a construction of an in-between condition, an inhabitable threshold, which becomes the main space of the project; the limits between the open and the content space merge to produce a single architectural entity. The design establishes three separate living quarters designed in accordance to the 3 activities planned; each of them is a set space defined by its use, but also by a very clear and simple architectural container: the first holds an open bar with a kitchenette, together with a couple of restrooms and dressing rooms; the second is a play area for children that can also be used as a reading room when temperatures drop at night; and finally the largest container is the living area, an enclosed, tempered and comfortable space for ​​conversation, TV, etcetera. But it is the desire to give continuity between these three separate areas where the project is empowered and becomes meaningful; a continuous space, in full contact with the nature but protected from its inclemency is set up not only to expand the enclosed uses, but also to allow new activities to arise. And it is through the definition of this central space, through the definition of its shape, that the contiguous courtyards are defined; those are as essential to the project as it is the built architecture, and allows constructing as a whole, single spatial experience. At the same time that the three built containers give continuity to the central space by mans of their use and space, the adjacent patios qualify it, while providing diversity and idiosyncrasy to open space. The design of the swimming pool is part of this same intervention, and responds to the desire to characterize the spaces; its formalization necessarily resonates the layout of the lounge, while incorporating to its nature the possibility of a multiplicity of ways of using water, and plunging on it. The building is located as a plinth valuing the views of the mountains. The building wants to be respectful to the existing context, and understands that the vegetation and life at open air are the real protagonist. Two impressive trees that are in place are incorporated within the layout of the lounge, as if they were part of the program itself. The Tepoztlan Lounge is constructed in concrete not just for being a inexpensive and labor intensive material in Mexico and to minimize its maintenance, but also to expose its structural simplicity and neutrality towards the astonishing nature. [IT] El edificio y sus patios Situado entre grandes montañas rocosas a unos 50 km al sur de la Ciudad de México, Tepoztlan es un lugar de leyendas y fuertes raíces culturales. Sus ruinas pre-hispánicas, un preservado centro histórico y un entorno natural exuberante, han convertido a este mágico paraje en refugio de artistas e intelectuales que huyen de forma temporal o permanente de la vorágine de la gran metrópoli Mexicana. Localizado en este contexto privilegiado, el Lounge Tepoztlan es en realidad el primer edificio terminando de un proyecto más ambicioso que incluye una serie de bungalós de tamaños y diseños distintos y para los cuales el lounge será el principal espacio comunitario, un catalizador de actividades en la naturaleza. El proyecto es una negociación entre interior y exterior, la construcción de un espacio intersticial habitable, que se convierte en el espacio central del proyecto. Los limites entre el espacio abierto y el contenido desaparecen para producir una sola entidad espacial. Lo importante no es el objeto arquitectónico, ni siquiera sus límites, lo realmente trascendente es la experiencia espacial; y para construirla se utilizan no solo materiales inherentes a la disciplina arquitectónica (muros, losas, columnas, etc.) sino también elementos más suaves y cambiantes a los que se les da igual o más valor para construir dicha experiencia espacial: plantas, arboles, flores, vegetación; todos ellos generando una paleta diversa y estacional, para construir una experiencia mixta que varia con el paso del tiempo y cambia a lo largo del año. El diseño establece tres habitáculos separados diseñados acorde con las tres actividades planeadas; cada uno de ellos se define por su uso, pero también por un claro contenedor de simples formas: el primero contiene un bar con cocineta, y una zona de cambiadores y baños; el segundo es una área de juegos infantiles que puede ser usado a su vez como área de lectura cuando las temperaturas bajan en la noche; y finalmente un contenedor de mayores dimensiones que es la sala de estar, un espacio protegido, templado y confortable adecuado para la conversación, TV, etcétera. Pero es la voluntad de dar continuidad entre estos tres espacios autónomos donde el proyecto se refuerza y toma sentido; se consolida un espacio continuo, en contacto total con la naturaleza pero protegido de las inclemencias del tiempo, que expande cada uno de los espacios definidos por los contenedores definiendo un espacio único, que interrelaciona cada una de las partes construyendo un todo continuo. Y es a través de la definición de este espacio central, a través de la definición de su forma, que los patios contiguos toman su verdadero valor. Estos son tan esenciales al proyecto como la edificación en sí misma, y permiten la construcción de una sola experiencia total. De la misma manera que los habitáculos dan continuidad al espacio central en lo referente a uso y espacio, los espacios abiertos adyacentes lo cualifican y le proporcionan diversidad, dando idiosincrasia al espacio abierto. El diseño de la piscina es parte de esta misma estrategia, y responde a la voluntad de caracterizar uno de los espacios laterales; su formalización necesariamente responde a la estructura del Lounge, incorporando en su forma la posibilidad de múltiples usos del agua y de su disfrute. El edificio se construye como un zócalo para subrayar las vistas de las montañas. La intervención quiere ser extremadamente respetuosa con el contexto existente y entiende que la vegetación y la vida al aire libre son los protagonistas reales del proyecto; dos árboles impresionantes que existen en el lugar son incorporados en el espacio como si fueran partes del programa mismo. El Lounge está construido en hormigón blanco no solo por ser en el contexto local de bajo coste, bajo mantenimiento, y alta demanda de mano de obra, sino también y sobre todo, porque permite al edificio exponer su simplicidad estructural y su neutralidad frente a una naturaleza desbordante.
