„The Viennese Waltz“ The task for the „Regionals“ zones in the Heinemann Duty Free Shops in the new “Skylink” terminal of the Vienna Airport was to express the theme of “Vienna” in the design of a multifunctional shop furniture element so that it can be experienced by the travellers and allows them to symbolically relate to the city from inside of the airport. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU’s concept is based on the Viennese waltz as a central Viennese topos that via a scripting software is translated into the third dimension. The interpretation was based on the movement in space created by the dance steps with its traditional right and left turns, on its fast pace and especially the “floating” form of the dance. This created a dynamic, space-encompassing sculpture. According to the resulting digital 3-D-model the monolithic spatial sculpture was milled from PU foam, coated with Polyurethane and finally varnished with gold paint as a reference to the important Viennese time of Art Nouveau. The tunes of the waltz “An der schönen blauen Donau“ (German for On the Beautiful Blue Danube) by Johann Strauss are played in continuous loops by an incorporated sound system: sound as an additional spatial dimension, is integrated in the design.
