The project area is in Nuseirat, a town located in the middle of the Gaza Strip. The political and social situation in this zone is critical and dangerous, so the project idea is to create a safe area where children can study, have fun and of course grow. For these reasons the shape of the school brings to mind the idea of a nest. This concept is clear in the plan; all classrooms, laboratories and service rooms are studied like a real nest with most of the doors and windows facing inside onto the collective open space where children can have outside lessons or play during the breaks, always under adult control. All rooms are connected by a wooden path covered by a ribbon roof designed to minimize the direct light inside the rooms thus avoiding glare.Water is very important in this area, so roofs are made with an impluvium to collect it in the rainy season, and the bathrooms are connected to an herbal purification system that helps to reuse the water. All this school's walls are made by tyres filled with earth, materials that are easily available and which could allow the local population to build the walls with their own hands in a short time; this activity would also help social interaction and collaboration.During the workshop we built a prototype of this school under Arco's supervision in order to understand better the technique and use of these unusual materials.
