Studio on Richmond | BDP Quadrangle
Toronto / Canada / 2016
Located in the Entertainment District in Toronto’s downtown core, a neighbourhood characterized by masonry-clad mid-rise warehouse buildings converted to new uses by a growing community of media, entertainment, advertising and related businesses, is Studio on Richmond. This 850-unit residential development is comprised of two glass towers rising from an eight-storey podium. Clad in three colours of precast concrete panels, the podium façades feature punched windows with a random pattern of glazed recessed balconies and projecting walkouts. The towers employ six-storey glass boxes separated by two-storey glass transitions – plus an innovative use of diagonal corner mullions and undulating balconies – to convey an impression of dynamic horizontal movement. Large interior spaces are integrated with outdoor terraces and green roofs to create recreation opportunities while a ground-level gallery displays the work of students and faculty from an adjacent OCAD University building.
