Hydroelectric power station Punibach | monovolume architecture + design

In the north-western part of South Tyrol, at the edge of the Ötztal Alps, lies the alpine farming village of Planeil at 1600m above sea level. As one of the driest areas in this region the mountain streams, such as the Puni River, are central lifelines for agriculture and local artisans. Another important use of the water is the use of hydroelectric power to generate electricity.

Below the picturesque village, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, the "Punibach" hydroelectric power plant embeds itself in the alpine surroundings as a simple, formal gesture of landscape architecture. The structure seems to emerge from the landscape. Like a wing, the sloping terrain opens up to reveal the power station. Curved and soft forms make the building look like a natural elevation in the landscape and thus create a harmonious connection between nature and technical infrastructure. The use of exposed concrete and larch wood reinforce the natural character of the structure.

The interior houses the machine room, medium-voltage room and control room. Daylight penetrates the building's interior through the laminated facade made of larch wood. At night, however, this appearance changes and the light from the interior penetrates to the outside, making the power plant a landmark visible from afar.

Ein Riss in der Landschaft
Im Nordwesten des Landes Südtirol am Rande der Ötztaler Alpen liegt auf 1600m Meereshöhe das Bergbauerndorf Planeil. Als eines der trockensten Gebiete in Südtirol sind in diesen Gegenden Gebirgsbäche, wie der Puni, zentrale Lebensadern für die Landwirtschaft und das lokale Handwerk. Ein weiterer wichtiger Nutzen des Wassers ist die Verwendung der Wasserkraft zur Stromerzeugung.

Unterhalb des malerischen Dörfchens, umgeben von dramatischer Bergkulisse, bettet sich das Wasserkraftwerk „Punibach“ als schlichte, formale Geste der Landschaftsarchitektur in die alpine Umgebung ein. Dabei scheint es aus der Landschaft aufzutauchen. Wie ein Flügel öffnet sich das abfallende Gelände und gibt den Blick auf das Kraftwerk frei. Geschwungene und weiche Formen lassen das Gebäude wie eine natürliche Erhebung in der Landschaft wirken und erzeugen dadurch eine harmonische Verbindung von Natur und technischer Infrastruktur. Der Einsatz von Sichtbeton und Lärchenholz verstärken den natürlichen Charakter der Struktur.

Das Innere beherbergt Maschinenraum, Mittelspannungsraum und Kontrollraum. Durch die Lamellenfassade aus Lärchenholz dringt Tageslicht in das Gebäudeinnere. Nachts hingegen wandelt sich dieses Erscheinungsbild und das Licht aus dem Inneren dringt nach außen vor und macht das Kraftwerk zum weithin sichtbaren Landmark.

Un'apertura nel paesaggio
Nella parte nord-occidentale dell'Alto Adige, al confine con la valle dell'Ötztal, a 1600 metri sul livello del mare, si trova la piccola cittadina alpina di Planeil. Essendo una delle aree più aride di questa regione, i torrenti di montagna, come il Rio Puni, sono la linfa vitale per l'agricoltura e l'artigianato locale. L’acqua inoltre viene utilizzata negli impianti idroelettrici per la produzione di elettricità.

Tra il paese montano, circondato da un coreografico scenario di montagna, la centrale idroelettrica "Punibach" si inserisce nell'ambiente alpino come un gesto semplice e formale. La struttura sembra emergere dal paesaggio. Come un'ala, il terreno in pendenza si apre per svelare la centrale. Forme curve e morbide fanno apparire l'edificio come un'elevazione naturale nel paesaggio e creano così una connessione armoniosa tra natura e infrastruttura tecnica. L'uso del cemento a vista e del legno di larice rafforza il carattere naturale della struttura.

All'interno si trova la sala macchine, la sala di media tensione e la sala di controllo. La luce del giorno penetra all'interno dell'edificio attraverso la facciata lamellare in legno di larice. Di notte, invece accade il contrario, l’architettura cambia aspetto e la luce dall'interno penetra all'esterno, rendendo la centrale elettrica un punto di riferimento visibile da lontano.
