For 25 years, the restored ChumCity Building provided CHUM Television with a unique broadcast facility in Toronto’s creative heart – and a striking historic façade that is now a Canadian icon. The building housed Citytv, the groundbreaking streetfront station, as well as MuchMusic and Bravo!. As CHUM Television grew, the building evolved in steps. Quadrangle’s original design was based on a flexible space-planning concept that combined sophisticated technology with the high-energy style of CHUM channels. Work environments doubled as shooting areas; a system of “hydrants” for cameras, audio and lighting enabled any corner of the facility to be on air within minutes. And on the ground floor, upward-sliding show windows invited the spontaneous interaction with passers-by that was integral to the broadcaster’s philosophy. Later, when many administrative and sales functions moved to an adjacent building, Quadrangle renovated that structure as well – and created a steel-and-glass bridge uniting the ChumCity campus. CHUM Limited, along with 299 Queen Street West, was sold to CTVglobemedia in 2007.
