The GMOA Keller, a time-honoured institution founded in 1858, has to date only been adapted rather gently and is much loved especially because of its authentic charm. At the same time, this curio also has a slightly anachronistic feel to it. The business is running well, the audiences and artists of the nearby Konzerthaus and Akademietheater guarantee full tables. This is why the landlord has decided to expand the restaurant with a sublevel. Our response is a contemporary, calm dining area which invites guests to discover the excellent Viennese cuisine and to enjoy a glass of wine at the crisply laid tables and which offers a space for regulars to have their beer at the classic Resopal table. The room can be adapted for special events with little effort. Knick-knacks are avoided, the brick arches are simply whitened; this is not a romantic cellar space. Conventional traditional restaurants make do without ventilation pipes. The ventilation requirements of the subterranean room are screened from the guests’ eyes. The wooden floor and the wood panelling are stained dark. The theatre curtain rail allows the rooms to be divided into zones and niches by a curtain. The tables measure 60x60cm and therefore allow quick reactions to guests’ wishes by easily rearranging tables even during a busy evening. Hence, large, unannounced groups can be catered for, as well as couples on a romantic dinner date.
