Our Clients lived in the 19th century Bridge House and had for a long time harboured thoughts of upgrading the attached steading to residential use. Due to listed building conditions the design of the street elevation was limited to the use of existing openings only. However, following the study of historic photographs it was discovered that there had been a hay loft opening which could be reconstructed to provide a large window for the first floor master bedroom. Additional openings were allowed on the garden elevation which combined with an open staircase, with access to the first floor and garden, it became possible to bring light deep into the building. By working collectively with the client it became possible to realise their ambitions of creating a bright, modern, efficient home for a young family within the historic shell of the ruined steading.
