Concept: Urban regeneration as a vocation of historical identity and as a regenerative element. Context: The objective of the project is to intervene architectonically in a two-floor building situated in the historical area of Ponta Delgada, establishing two principles of intervention: rehabilitate and integrate. Programme: The project proposes the division of the two floors and their conversion into commercial and service spaces, highlighting the geometry of the ceiling of floor 1 which, similar to that of the roof, and which benefits from the height of the wall. Three skylights provide illumination, engendering an harmonious space and visual relations with surrounding facades. Strategy: The strategy that was adopted consisted in safeguarding and rehabilitating the historical identity of the existing building, the architectonic composition of the facades and its decorative elements. This strategy of preserving the historical authenticity of the building is complemented by a new architectonic plan that introduces commercial and services areas into a space that will permit new entrepreneurial and business activities, attributes that are fundamental to the urban regeneration of historical areas.
