Man struggles to find equilibrium with his environment, but given the extremes of the desert, life within must be tenacious. D-House is a conceptual design that echoes the beauty and rigor of survival in such a place. As a landscape, one must look closely to see the true beauty of the desert: the stripes of iron red running through the mountains, the golden flower blooming in the shade of a cactus, the spotted back of a beetle. And like its namesake, D-House is a slate on which individual details create the aesthetic. The severe geometry and clean lines are unassuming yet persistent, like a sound traveling across the valley. Structural materials include concrete and cor-ten steel and reflect the unyielding ground it is built on. The overall structure opens to the morning sun in the East, but offers protection from the late afternoon heat. It is a home for someone looking to be inspired by strength and starkness and to let it resonate through him or her, as if nothing separated the person from the land.
