Large-scale site specific installation : "ATLAS in-situ"
10 km of bambou in the Glass Atrium of Beaux-Arts Paris
The work bridges realms of sculpture, architecture, and performance. Visitors are invited to engage in, into and around, with its creation and ongoing incarnations.
The structure is rooted in the artists’abiding interest in organic systems and their exploration of change and evolution. Johnson considers this work unfinished and emerging simultaneously, suggesting the complexity and energy of a living organism evolving, with chaos as the underlying principle.
Bamboo was also used as an instrument of torture in the prison of Poulo Condor. Open cage, breathing chest, and primitive architecture, it admits its structure, its fragility, its strength and its architectonics.
"ATLAS in-situ" is a microcosm of life itself, with inherent complexities, addressing concepts of self-organization, adaptation and the relationship between the evanescence and permanence toward the tensions between the monument and the natural elements.
