Public library and music school in Almonte | Donaire Arquitectos

Rehabiltation of the “Los Reales de Almonte” Warehouse for use as a public library, and School of Arts (Music, Dance and Art). The project is centred on a warehouse registered as being of Cultural Interest. It is situated in the “Culture City” in Almonte, next to the town’s new Theatre and enclosed within a public square. Specifically, the library is located in a wine cellar, typical of the local area. The building is 78m long and 10,5m wide, with a total area of 821 m² The building is open on 3 sides. The work carried included the construction of a gallery with a new structure and foundations without alerting the original structure of the building to maintain and incorporate the original features. The library occupies 14 of the 17 modules, the 3 remaining modules in the East Wing house the Arts Schools. The main Entrance is in the South-East of the building, in such a way that gives it a spacious feel. Book control / loaning / administration is the first area encountered, that has a controlled height. This is followed by Press and Reading Room using the full height of the Warehouse. The last area is the Children’s Area lit by large and diffuse light sources, with a small storage area and a second flight of stairs. In the upper floor there is a Reading Room and Audio-Visuals. The project accentuates the original features of the building, as a Warehouse, creating different spaces each adapted to its new use. The interior design and furniture forms a fundamental part of the work, with simple designs easily repeatable within the different needs and varied program of the library and public services offered in this space. [SP] Rehabilitación de la antigua bodega Los Reales de Almonte, para biblioteca, y Escuela de música, danza y pintura. La intervención se centra en una bodega que está catalogada como Bien de Interés Cultural. Se sitúa en la Ciudad de la Cultura del Almonte, junto al nuevo Espacio Escénico de la localidad. Todo ello articulado por una plaza pública. La biblioteca se ubica concretamente en el edificio donde se almacenaba el vino, siendo una pieza con una estructura típica de bodega de la zona, de unos 78 metros de longitud por 10,50 de ancho, con una superficie construida de unos 821 m². El edificio es exento en tres de sus lados. La intervención realizada consolida sin altera el sistema constructivo original y consiste en construir una entreplanta con una cimentación y estructura nueva que no toca la estructura portante existente para poder resolver todo el programa planteado originalmente. La biblioteca ocupará 14 de los 17 módulos que conforman la nave, los tres restantes en el ala Este se destinarán a la Escuela de Música. Tiene su entrada principal por el extremo Sur-este, de tal manera que la percepción del espacio de la bodega es casi completo. El control de libros y préstamo y administración es el primer uso que se encuentra, con una altura mas controlada. La zona de prensa sucede a la zona de lectura y consulta, abierta a toda la altura da la nave. Al fondo se sitúa la zona de niños iluminado con grandes puntos de luz difusa, con un pequeño almacén, y la escalera secundaria. En la planta alta la sala de lectura se vuelca sobre la doble altura, junto a la sala de audiovisuales. La propuesta potencia los valores originales del edificio como almacén para generar diferentes espacios acondicionados para su nuevo uso. El partir del concepto de un vaciado del edificio existente, produce que el diseño del mobiliario forme parte fundamental de la intervención, resuelto con diseños sencillos fácilmente repetitivos y reproducibles para las distintas necesidades del variado programa de la biblioteca y servicios públicos que ofrece.
