Project Description: The greatest challenge faced in this project was the minimal dimensions of available space (10ft x 20ft) and the further reduction of this space by a utility staircase that needed to remain as access to 2nd floor storage. Changing rooms were placed beneath the stairwell and the merchandise counter integrated with the front end of the stair to maximize efficient use of available space. A series of false columns divide the merchandise display into three distinct zones as well as hiding utility service connections and other back of house infrastructure. A mirror at the back wall creates the illusion of depth within the space. The design solution creates a dynamic interior space without visually overwhelming the merchandise nor the shoppers ´ experience of the space. On the exterior, a backlit, perforated metal box covers the full height of the building´s second story to create a strong but elegant presence to the street scape in addition to drawing attention to the store which is located on a busy retail street.
