INTRODUCTION The challenge of the competition was for the BAC community to generate preliminary design concepts for a project known as, The World Unity Landmark. Through architecture and landscape design, this innovative project brings together poetry and design to promote a vision for diversity. Around 12 entries were eventually submitted for review by a jury comprised of leaders from the community. THE CLIENT World Unity, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to make a continuing and lasting contribution towards the elimination of all forms of racial, ethnic, gender, religious and cultural bigotry, prejudices, discrimination and biases. They believe that the construction of a permanent landmark with an inscription of the Sun Poem will help achieve this vision. It reads as follows: Are you greater than the sun that shines on everyone: Black, Brown, Yellow, Red and White the sun does not discriminate. Their goal was to have a preliminary design concept to showcase to the City and to the Urban League at their National Conference duriing the summer of 2011. A great opportunity to send a new diversity and inclusion vision to the African American thought and opinion leaders from 36 states and District of Columbia. The World Unity Landmark supports the objective of the Commonwealth Compact that BAC has signed on to along with 199 other organizations, companies and institutions. SCOPE AND BUDGET The estimated construction budget should range between $2,000,000 and $5,000,000. The winning entry will be considered in the future planning, programming and installation in the park. The sight is part of the future HarborWalk, directly above an MBTA Silver Line tunnel. All proposals need to consider and maintain the integrity of these existing landscape and structural elements. ***THE CLIENT HAS DECIDED TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THIS DESIGN.
