Condo Canal Lachine (eng-fra) ENG - c3studio’s interior architecture design for Condo Canal Lachine in Montréal (Québec, Canada) won top honours in the residential/kitchen category in the annual Quebec competition Grands Prix du Design in 2011. Beyond its apparent simplicity, the interior space of the residence reveals a visual personality that evokes a monolithic sculpture rather than simply a living space. A light space The plan designed by Mario Painchaud, founder of c3studio, is a model of pragmatism and of the sense of the architectural unit. To take advantage of the only fenestration in the apartment, situated in the living room, he decompartmentalized the residential space by opening the kitchen and dining room onto the living room. A single support column separates the kitchen from the dining room. Moreover, the dining room has been transferred into the kitchen area for an appreciable gain in space, and the kitchen has been designed as a long, functional corridor. And yet, Painchaud has given each area its own identity by playing on architectural elements and materials. A parallelepiped-shaped dropped ceiling visually defines the space of the kitchen and dining room. The lacquered laminate surfaces energize the kitchen by creating plays of light and perspectives. A glass panel isolates the entranceway, defined by a hot-rolled-steel floor. On the other hand, to preserve the unity of the space as a while, a light wood floor is used throughout, including in the kitchen. Sculptural interior architecture By systematically using cube shapes, in both the design and the furniture, Painchaud gives the impression that the space was excavated from the material, giving it a strong visual personality. Inspired by a cave dwelling, the architecture distils a feeling of enveloping intimacy. This visual approach to the space is particularly well illustrated in the kitchen. By composing this room simply around two symmetrical volumes, “hollowed out” to accommodate counters and appliances, Painchaud gives the illusion of a monolithic sculpture excavated from an enormous block of raw material. To reinforce this illusion, the designer has ensured the purity of the lines of this “cut-out” monolith by hiding all the storage in customized cabinets and integrating the appliances and equipment (sink, cooktop, recessed lighting, and so on) into the different surfaces. Au-delà de sa simplicité apparente, l’espace intérieur de la résidence dévoile une personnalité plastique qui évoque davantage une sculpture monolithique qu’un simple lieu de vie. Espace de lumière L’intervention du designer Mario Painchaud, fondateur de c3studio, est un modèle de pragmatisme et de sens de l’unité architecturale. Pour tirer profit de la seule fenestration de l’appartement présente dans le salon, il a décloisonné l’espace résidentiel en ouvrant la cuisine et la salle à manger sur le salon. Seul un pilier de soutien sépare la cuisine de la salle à manger. Par ailleurs, celle-ci a été transférée dans la cuisine pour un gain de place appréciable, tandis que cette dernière a été conçue comme un long corridor fonctionnel. Pourtant, le designer a su redonner à chaque pièce son identité propre, en jouant sur des éléments d’architecture et sur les matériaux. Une retombée de plafond parallélépipédique délimite visuellement l’espace de la cuisine et de la salle à manger. Les surfaces en stratifié laqué dynamisent la cuisine par la création de jeux de lumière et de perspectives. Un panneau de verre isole l’entrée, identifiée par un sol en acier laminé à chaud. En revanche, pour conserver une unité à l’ensemble, un plancher de bois clair est omniprésent, y compris dans la cuisine. Architecture intérieure sculpturale En systématisant l’utilisation de la forme cubique, autant dans l’architecture que dans le mobilier, le designer parvient à donner l’impression que l’espace nait d’une excavation de la matière, offrant ainsi au lieu une personnalité plastique forte. À l’instar d’un habitat troglodytique, l’architecture du lieu distille alors un sentiment d’intimité enveloppante. Cette approche plastique de l’espace est particulièrement bien illustrée dans la cuisine. En composant celle-ci simplement autour de deux volumes symétriques, « creusés » pour recevoir les comptoirs et équipements, le designer donne l’illusion d’une sculpture monolithique qui aurait été excavée dans un énorme bloc de matière brute. Pour renforcer cette illusion, Mario Painchaud a pris soin de s’assurer de la pureté des lignes de ce monolithe « découpé », en dissimulant tous les éléments de rangement derrière des armoires faites sur mesure, et en intégrant les équipements aux différentes surfaces (évier, plaque de cuisson, luminaires encastrés…).
