Crafted Symmetry San Diego / United States / 2009

The Crafted Symmetry installation is a metaphor for my investigation of a symbiotic architecture in which individual components interact to create a system. The form is inspired by the symmetry and structural firmness observed in the decomposed Cholla cactus.
The installation contains 300 recycled cardboard rings (each measuring 3” in diameter and 2 ½” in depth) connected by 1,076 nuts and bolts, creating a 5’ high by 4’ wide tubular screen.
By using modularity to generate complexity through repetition, Crafted Symmetry explores the production of spatial effects through simple strategies as well as the creation of cohesive and structurally fit environments.
The tubular screen drapes like a cloth epitomizing both textural fluidity and calculated precision. It translates my understanding of natural elements and proves the antithesis of complex simplicity and symbiotic architecture.
