Wong House | Lawrence Cheung

A small gallery space was added to house the client's longtime collection of modern art. Located on the lower level of the house, the windowless gallery was conceived by reorganizing the existing conglomeration of bathroom, hallway, and storage spaces. The white ceiling plane appears to be floating in space caused by the artificial lighting in the surrounding light coves. Narrow reveals at the base of the wall planes create the illusion that the walls are lifting away from the floor. Visitors enter the minimalist space from two opposite directions through deep openings that are as high as the soffits, thus creating a visual continuity in the horizontal datum. The openings on either end help create a spatial transition between the gallery and the surrounding spaces.
