Loft apartment in Montfermeil (eng-fra) ENG - The project involved the creation of a loft apartment in a recently built property at the heart of a residential neighbourhood in Montfermeil, a Paris suburb. Originally an unfinished two-story space with terraces, the layout for the interior was designed using a traditional loft approach. Organisationally, the apartment is conceived as flowing and extending both horizontally and vertically from the living room, which serves as the focal point of both the design and the living space. Set back from the entrance door, the foyer is intended both for greeting visitors and to provide additional storage space. It leads into a large and contiguous area comprised of the living room, the dining room and the kitchen fronted by a large central island. The entire space is bathed in light, thanks to the sliding glass doors opening onto terraces. During the day, the living room looks directly out onto its terrace, which benefits from full southern exposure. At nightfall, a totally opaque shutter is lowered, which also serves as a projection screen: the spacious living space is thus transformed into a home cinema. The living room area extends the full height of the two-story loft. A large light fixture hangs from the ceiling. A network of wires extends from this central fixture to the shelving and passageway along the walls on the upper level, where additional ambient light fixtures regulated with dimmers are installed. The shelving was conceived not just for the storage of books or the display of collection objects. It also conceals the staircase used to access the upper floor as well as anoffice space underneath. Metal modules are stacked in a random manner and form a protective railing for the mezzanine. The shelving system is comprised of wooden planks and V-shaped semi-industrialised steel supports. From the staircase, multiple off-centre views of the surrounding space are offered, due to the positioning of the modules. They can serve as alcoves for the installation of lighting fixtures, either at the front or the rear. This conception also meets the need to cut manufacturing costs. On the upper level, wide doorways connect the two bedrooms to the passageway. These two bedrooms were designed to ensure privacy, as was the bathroom also on the upper level, but all three of these rooms make the most of the open and airy feeling characterising the entire loft and afford clear views of the patio. New flooring for the bathroom was added to the original volume in order to install this room as a suspended box. This box is punctuated by a large framed window positioned over a bathtub island. The entire bathroom is awash in natural light and offers yet another perspective on the living room. FRA - Le projet a porté sur la création d’un loft dans une construction récente au cœur d’un quartier résidentiel à Montfermeil. L’espace intérieur, à l’origine brut sur deux niveaux et terrasses, a été aménagé sur le modèle classique d’un loft. Il se développe à la fois horizontalement et verticalement autour du salon, coeur de vie de l’habitation. Située en retrait, l’entrée conçue comme un espace d’accueil et de rangement, conduit vers un grand volume composé de plain-pied par le salon, la salle à manger et la cuisine devancée d’un grand îlot central. L’espace est baigné de lumière de part et d’autre des vitrages coulissants donnant sur les balcons. En journée, la vue depuis le salon est dégagée et donne sur la terrasse plein sud. Le soir, un store occultant descend pour faire office d’écran de projection : le spacieux lieu de vie se transforme en espace dédié au cinéma. Le salon se développe sur la hauteur des deux niveaux de l’appartement. Un grand lustre descend depuis le plafond. Il déploie un réseau de fils jusqu’au coeur des étagères et du garde-corps où sont installés des éclairages d’ambiances réglés sur variateurs. La bibliothèque a été pensée pour dépasser les fonctions classiques de rangements de livres ou de collection. Elle dissimule l’escalier d’accès à l’étage ainsi qu’un bureau en sous face. Des modules métalliques s’empilent aléatoirement pour constituer le garde-corps de protection de la mezzanine. Il s’agit d’un système d’étagères composé de plateaux en bois et d’éléments acier semi-industrialisés qui prennent la forme d’un V. Dans la montée d’escalier, la position des modules offre des angles de vues variés et désaxés sur l’espace environnant. Ils peuvent servir d’alcôves dédiées à la mise en place du dispositif d’éclairage, au recto ou au verso. Ce procédé constructif répond par ailleurs à des économies de fabrication. A l’étage, les deux chambres s’ouvrent sur la coursive par de larges portes. Conçues comme la salle de bain pour répondre à l’intimité, elles profitent aussi pleinement de la clarté et de la vue sur le patio. Au volume d’origine, un nouveau plancher a été conçu pour créer la salle de bain comme une boite suspendue. Elle est percée d’un grand cadre vitré donnant sur une baignoire en îlot. Elle est baignée de lumière naturelle et profite d’un nouveau point de vue sur le salon.
