Restoration of the Santo Stefano Rotondo Basilica

Nell’intervento si riconosce una progettazione condotta con grande sensibilità, adesione al dato storico, volontà di favorire la ‘lettura’ del monumento e le suggestioni provenienti dai pochi frammenti antichi superstiti, attenzione a restituire allo spazio interno una piena fruibilità come edificio ecclesiastico vivo e non solo come ‘museo di se stesso’. Gli interventi presentati hanno riguardato soprattutto il pavimento, il sistema d’illuminazione interno, la copertura degli ambienti ipogei ed il contenimento dell’umidità. Rispettosa ed elegante nella sua creatività si dimostra la definizione dei corpi illuminanti e, diversamente, l’integrazione pavimentale della Cappella di Santo Stefano. The project shows clear evidence of design work performed with great sensitivity, respect for historical exactitude, a desire to facilitate “interpretation” of the monument and the evocative atmosphere deriving from the few old surviving fragments and attention to making the interior fully utilisable as a living ecclesiastical building, not just a “museum of itself”. The work presented involves mainly the floor, the interior lighting system, the roof of the underground spaces and containment of humidity. In different ways, both definition of the light sources and integration of the floor of the Santo Stefano Chapel are respectful and elegant in their creativity.
