Located on a mezzanine space within a banking chamber the concept aimed to give this retail space a presence beyond the building foyer. The visual connection of a fully glazed facade and the desire to maintain the natural light source was in conflict with the privacy and security requirements of the Bank. A semi-transparent “U” glass facade and kinetic lighting design transform a potentially invisible space into a dynamic and constantly active presence maximising the perception of the space from the street. A single glazed block sits within the large volume, housing the consulting rooms and testing equipment, and a smaller block acts as the reception counter. Offices and ancillary spaces are on a mid-level floor at the end of the retail space. This area is partially concealed behind a white screen yet allowing support staff to maintain a visual connection with the retail team. Display of frames is the primary focus of the client. To minimise distractions the whole interior is white and glass with a single panel entirely devoted to the logo graphic in orange. Up lighting the existing white, and a coffered ceiling gives a luminous quality that resonates in the room. Freestanding glowing translucent display towers support the frames as though they are hovering in space. The purity of the tower elements are emphasised by the simplicty of the panels themselves with frames on the back and front and mirrors on the sides. Appreciation of the frames is not complicated by support mechanisms. The resulting retail space is a haven from the busy city streets and yet is inherently connected to them through the transfer of light. A successful retail experience and inspiring work environment, the eye practice hovers within the volume of another institution with quite a separate function. The idea of inserting smaller, independent retail into the crevasses and air space of other mega institutions has vast potential for more efficient use of space and resources that can only enhance the shopping experience.
