This brief was for an urban landscape seating element to be constructed from bricks at Chowder Bay, on the Sydney Harbour Foreshore. The design was inspired by the natural context of the Bay, the rolling hills and the water. The colour responds to the grassy context and the heritage precinct whilst also blending into the surrounds as much as possible. Although sculptural in form the intent was to develop a modular system that could be adapted and reused for future applications. The result was our own custom brick shape. We believe that the future of bricks relies on the ability to create unique products that will satisfy the relevant application. The advantage of our system is that the bricks can be laid to create a vertical stack bonded wall, but they can also be used to achieve a curved surface. The lounge itself is made up of three identical ribbons of brick that are offset from each other to create different seating / lying options. When sitting in some positions you can use other areas as a table. The variety and cluster of seats allows a large group of people to occupy the sculpture either together or separately at the same time.
