École des arts (eng) (fra) ENG - Tetrarc architects from Nantes in France have designed the new Maison des Arts of Saint Herblain in the suburbs of the Breton city of Nantes. The programme envisaged a series of functions, from music to plastic arts, from visual arts to a library, as well as an auditorium for the events inside. An iridescent metallic shell encloses the independent forms associated to the various functions, maintaining a respectful distance. A central form, or rather two: the shell closing on itself, containing an off centre open air patio. Music, dance, theatre are housed in the closed part, while the exhibition space opens up to the natural light. True to the imperatives of the project, the activities are kept separate, although they are all in one place so that they have a greater influence on the territory, as well as facilitating contamination. Gold and incandescence to transcend the fun of learning and playing Program: Build an “Arts House” in Nantes suburb. Set together in a functional complex: spaces dedicated to the practice of music, plastic and visual arts, and a library, an auditorium and all premises designed for the good working of the whole building. Project: Development of artistic practices and of reading implies to join together many different entities (which were independent until now) in order to improve the conditions of transmitting knowledge through better visitors reception conditions. On one hand Tétrarc establish a contained expansion on the plan by offering an incandescent shield surrounded by autonomous entities. On the other hand a compact shape seems to be suspended above delicate glass undulation on the elevation. To take away and to federate, to keep at distance and to aggregate: as a result of the imperatives of the program the paradox is only apparent. So there is one shape. In fact there are two: one shield, the auditorium, “withdrawn” like a shell into itself, and a forum open to the sky like a patio. Music, dance and theatre in the first one, exhibitions on the walls of second one: two spaces dedicated to the final outcome of all the artistic practices developed here. An indoor pedestrian “street” encircles the auditorium in order to insulate it from the nearby open spaces. Nevertheless this kind of “spatial quarantine” allows connexions to the hall, the ticket office and the bar. This conch shape (red like a beating heart) is surrounded by platforms. Each one of them is dedicated to one artistic practice; they are built on one or two level, depending on the needed surface area). Indeed the intentions of containing the program in a limited volume and of preserving the woodland of the place imply to set the building on one floor on a base. Une coque incandescente entourée, à distance respectueuse, d’entités autonomes établissant en plan une sorte d’éclatement contenu, alors qu’en élévation une forme compacte paraît prendre appui sur de fines ondulations de verre : éloigner et fédérer, tenir à distance et agréger. Le paradoxe n’est qu’apparent. Il tient aux impératifs du programme. Eux-mêmes liés aux activités des différentes entités (plateformes) jusque là indépendantes et réunies ici pour de meilleures conditions de travail, d’accueil, de transmission de savoirs et une présence accrue dans le vaste territoire d’une agglomération suburbaine. Une forme centrale donc. Voire même, à y regarder de plus près, deux : une coque refermée sur elle-même et, décentrée, un patio ouvert sur le ciel. Musique, Danse, Théâtre dans la première. Expositions sur la seconde. Deux aboutissements de pratiques, deux finalités rêvées ou enviées de toutes les pratiques artistiques développées ici. Une coque indépendante ceinte par une rue intérieure. Une rue qui, comme le béton constituant les voûtes de la salle, isole du bruit, protège des nuisances les plateformes voisines, en fait toutes les autres plateformes. L’isolement comme isolation phonique. Une sorte de quarantaine spatiale qui ne prive pas l’auditorium d’une connexion directe avec le hall, la billetterie, le bar ouvert les soirs de représentation artistique. Une conque rouge comme un cœur battant. Avec autour, autant d’entités physiques que de plateformes. Sur un ou deux niveaux, selon les surfaces qui leur sont nécessaires car la volonté de contenir le programme dans un volume relativement limité pour générer des économies et préserver les surfaces boisées du terrain, conduit à s’établir sur un socle et un niveau supérieur.
