The residence located in Arachova is surrounded by trees and has a spectacular view over the canyon.
The steep slope of the site and the amazing view from it, became instantly essential elements of the composition. The house was designed in three levels that communicate, both internally and externally with each one having its own external space. The building is shaped in the form of a rectangular parallelogram, while its volume is developed in such a way, in order to function as a continuation of the natural terrain.
The wall of the rear facade is detached and then moved so as not only to provide insulation but also to incorporate the vertical circulation in the form of a staircase and a lift. The roof-light above this space acts as a source of natural lighting and ventilation.
Another key element of the composition is the chimney which cuts vertically the main volume in all levels, defines the use of space internally, separates the facade and delimits its balconies.
Large openings on the main facade unite the building with nature whereas the rest of the windows were treated like picture capturing images of the breathtaking view. These openings together with the vertical element of the chimney are factors that give the building its unique character.
Based on the needs of the clients the building was divided in two parts: the main residence and guest house which is located on the last level. On the ground floor the fireplace defines the functions of the surrounding spaces while the first floor has the form of an attic. The bedrooms are placed at the lower level of the residence.
Simple lines, the use of local materials and the exposure of structural elements creates a friendly and warm environment that becomes one with its surroundings and exploits the potential of the topography of the site, combining traditional architecture with modern design.
