Located just outside Prague’s historic city center, in the first suburb built outside the old city walls, the apartment is part of a tenament building from the late 19th century. The 88m² flat is home to an international couple who chose the location for its proximity to the city center yet a surprisingly quiet and green setting. The flat looks into a green square (Lyčkovo namestí) and sits next to the prominent Karlín School, one of the rare and cherished Art Nouveau buildings in Prague. Hence it was of no surprise that the clients pondered both contemporary and traditional ideas when deciding on a scheme for the interior. In spite of the flat’s desolate state upon purchase and a need for a major overhaul, there was a desire to preserve its original spirit and complement it with a careful selection of contemporary furniture and accessories. Architect Barbara Čorejová of bcstudio responded with an approach that unified these elements, deploying a strategy based on an elegant balance between old and new. Authentic windows, window frames, doors and parquet floors were restored to their original state, while a spacious kitchen, built-in storage, generous bathroom, and tailored furniture featured as new elements in the transformation. Some of the client’s inherited antique furniture was also carefully restored and incorporated into the design. Old lounge chairs were sanded, lacquered and upholstered with new fabric, fitting seamlessly into a glazed alcove in the main living space. Another goal was to facilitate large amounts of storage without compromising the loft-like quality of the spaces. The resulting scheme maintains a vast sense of openness while accommodating all of the client’s books, art pieces, decorations and most importantly, the couple’s two very active cats.
