Maison Demers (eng - fra) ENG - The project takes place in the center of a typical 1900 labor housing lot in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough in Montreal. Common with that kind of building, the main facade remains modest and barely free of ornamentation. This house is part of a 4 duplexes ensemble encircling a common courtyard accessible from a single carriage entrance. The request was to transform one of the duplexes into a single-family house and to reform the three other yard facades. Inside, a large wood mass structures most of the spaces and form the key of the layout of the house. Independent, this sculpted block is placed in front of a wide white painted brick wall and stands separated of the house with a void all along. At its simplest expression, the stairs seems to be cut in the wood block. Underneath the stairs are hidden a closet, the basement access, a water closet and the kitchen cabinets. The long convergence lines created here were thought to dynamise the perspective. Those lines are reinforced with the change of material on the floor and the dropped ceiling, which is hiding the structure and the mechanic of the whole house. Huge doors and windows help create an interaction with the common courtyard outside. Windows seems to stand right on the countertop. In summer time, occupants can open the garage door and extend their living space to the outside. The wooden volume is linked to the rest of the house on the second floor with a light grate and glass passage, suspended in the void. The void and the glass guardrails contribute a lot to the great luminosity of the residence. The bathroom separates an open bedroom from an office space. Minimalist, the bathroom is all covered with glass mosaic and naturally illuminated with a wide window in the office space. Outside, the yellow tinted wood carriage entrance links the more conservative façade to the yard with its more contemporary environment. Like a signal, this contrasting element gives a clue to the passerby of what has been going on in the interior. Inside of it, a long bike rack was integrated for the inhabitants sharing the yard. On the other side, the wall is prolonged to make the terrace and the large openings more private. FRA - Cette résidence s’inscrit dans un projet de restauration d’un ensemble de 4 duplex ceinturant une cour commune accessible uniquement depuis une porte cochère. Le client souhaitait transformer l’un des duplex en une maison unifamiliale contemporaine pour y habiter. L’un des éléments clé de l’aménagement intérieur de la maison est le grand massif de bois structurant l’ensemble des espaces et des circulations. Élément unique et indépendant, le bloc est déposé en avant plan du mur de maçonnerie peint blanc et reste séparé par une faille du reste de la maison. Réduit à sa plus simple expression, l’escalier semble avoir été taillé à même ce massif de bois. Parfaitement dissimulés s’y cachent les rangements, la salle d’eau, l’accès au vide sanitaire ainsi qu’une partie des armoires de la cuisine. Les longues lignes de fuites, créées par cette masse s’étirant d’un bout à l’autre de la maison, ont été travaillées de manière à dynamiser la perspective. Celles-ci sont renforcées par le changement franc de revêtement au sol (pierre/minces lattes de noyer) ainsi que par une retombée de plafond renfermant la mécanique et la structure de l’ensemble de la maison. En été, les aires de vie au rez-de-chaussée s’étirent vers l’extérieur sur une terrasse accessible par une grande porte escamotable. Enfin, l’utilisation du noyer, en contraste avec la pierre grise et la blancheur des murs, apportent à la fois sobriété et chaleur aux lieux. Entièrement détaché à l’étage du reste du plancher, le volume de bois est relié au reste de la maison par un caillebottis métallique suspendu dans le vide. Cette ouverture dans le plancher, en plus des garde-corps de verre, assure une luminosité abondante dans toute la maison. Le volume de la salle de bain principale divise les espaces plus privés de l’étage. Celle-ci, travaillée dans sa plus simple expression est entièrement tapissée de pâte de verre grise et bénéficie d’un éclairage naturel grâce au vitrage situé dans le haut d’un mur.
