MAISON DE MENTANA (eng – fra) ENG This project consists in the major transformation of a hundred years old duplex from the Plateau Mont-Royal into a single home, in order to accommodate the four family members. The plan of this new house is defined by the addition of two vertical planes, intersecting at the edge of the main volume and the back part of the building. The first axis defines the main circulation as well as integrating the bearing wall of the building. This axis is expressed as multiple panels. Doors and openings between those panels were aligned from one floor to the other in order to create clean vertical lines. The second plane, perpendicular to the first, combines a large glass panel and multiple sliding doors, which can be slide on both levels. This modulation of the panels gives the occupants the possibility to choose the degree of opening and closure they need in function of their activity. Those two structural plans are underlined by the same gray color, contrasting with the purity and the brightness of the white walls. Living spaces were consciously located at the back of the house, to reinforce the connection with the courtyard. Large and generous windows also emphasize this interrelation between inside and outside. The staircase, leading to more private spaces, is hidden behind a bright green wall, which also defines the dining room limits. The central space is filled with a diffused light coming from a large skylight. Overall, the architectural components of those spaces have been designed to express verticality, simplicity and lightness. Full-height doors, recessed baseboards, kitchen as well as bathrooms were designed to take part in this same idea. The natural color and brightness of the maple wood choose for the kitchen cabinets and flooring also contribute to the natural simplicity of those living spaces. FRA Initialement, le projet de Mentana consiste en la transformation d’un duplex centenaire du Plateau Mont-Royal en une maison unifamiliale sur deux étages pour y accommoder les quatre membres d’une famille. La géométrie de la maison est constituée de deux plans verticaux se croisant à la limite du corps principal et du corps arrière du bâtiment. Un premier plan, délimitant l’axe de circulation et intégrant la structure porteuse de la maison, est fractionné sur toute sa double hauteur pour y aligner les ouvertures donnant accès aux différentes pièces de la résidence. Un deuxième plan, perpendiculaire au premier, est entièrement articulé par un ensemble de plans coulissants, fixes et vitrés, qui permettent de moduler l’espace selon les horaires de vie variés des occupants tout en contrôlant le degré de fermeture des espaces. Ces deux plans structurants sont soulignés par leur couleur grise qui contrastant avec les murs blancs. L’aménagement a été réfléchi de sorte que les espaces de vie se trouvent à l’arrière, en relation avec la cour. La fenestration, très généreuse, accentue d’ailleurs la continuité entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur. L’escalier menant aux espaces plus privés à l’étage est dissimulé derrière une cloison de couleur vive qui délimite la salle à manger. Celle-ci se trouve dans un espace double hauteur, baignée par la lumière diffuse et uniforme d’un long puit de lumière. Dans l’ensemble, les différents détails et composantes architecturales ont été pensés pour exprimer la verticalité, la simplicité ainsi que la légèreté de la maison. C’est dans cet esprit qu’ont été conçues entre autres les portes pleines hauteurs, les plinthes encastrées, la cuisine et les salles de bain. L’érable, très clair, contribue d’autant plus à la pureté naturelle de la matérialité.
