Building rehabilitation in Lisbon Lisbon / Portugal / 2010

Project developed for the “Arquitectar 2010” competition (1st Prize) under the urban rehabilitation and sustainability theme. The intervention operates a 200 year old residential building in the consolidated Lisbon city center. After studying several interventions in this kind of building, we noticed that architects tend to add an extra floor or some kind of extension. The project maintains the building envelope, re-defining interior and common circulation spaces, providing the pre-existent building with a contemporary feel. The potential of a neglected façade is explored with the creation of a new interiorized exterior area, open, and naturally illuminated but protected from the urban space with a vertical brise-soleil.
