Apartment 5 in Athens | Achilles Kalogridis

Re-design of an existing apartment in a typical suburban block of flats in the north suburbs of Athens. While preserving the original location of all the main living spaces, the design aims at an overall transformation of the interior. A small vestibule forms the entrance and isolates it from external disturbances by a vertical sliding panel, introducing a new environment where the main objective is the visual and aesthetic tranquility and harmony. The kitchen integrates with the living and dining area, growing and brightening the feeling and intimacy of the space. A series of white vertical folding panels either reveal or isolate the kitchen utilities. A workbench serves as a visual and physical border towards the living room. A minimum palette of materials, styles, colors and textures has been used. Furniture is carefully selected consisting of only the basic, however without compromising comfort. The rest of modern everyday devices and clutter (home cinemas, books, magazines etc.) are stored and hidden behind openable panels on either side of the new fireplace arrangement. A bench runs full length in front of the fireplace and extends outside.
