Project of an indoor swimming pool solar”, Italy. We hereby certify that the project cited above was entered in the competition in which 6,065 entries were received. The submission was one of 2,251 entries that met the stringent criteria of the competition and was presented to the respective regional Holcim Awards jury headed by: Europe Jürgen Mayer H., Germany North America Mohsen Mostafavi, USA Latin America Carolyn Aguilar, Mexico Africa Middle East Hashim Sarkis, Lebanon Asia Pacific Wowo Ding, China The Holcim Awards is an international competition of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction. The competition celebrates innovative, future-oriented and tangible sustainable construction projects from around the globe. Five “target issues” form the basis on which projects are assessed. Innovation and transferability Ethical standards and social equity Environmental quality and resource efficiency Economic performance and compatibility Contextual and aesthetic impact. On behalf of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, we would like to congratulate you on this achievement, and thank you for your contribution to promoting sustainable construction – in building and civil engineering works; landscape, urban design and infrastructure; products and construction technologies; or with a visionary project in the “Next Generation” category. Prof. Dr. Hans-Rudolf Schalcher Head of the Technical Competence Center Holcim Foundation, c/o ETH Zurich Edward Schwarz General Manager of the Holcim Foundation www.holcimawards.org PROJECT DESCRIPTION Inserted in new sports area, the pool is oriented differently from the other existing buildings, following the path of the Sun. The architectural shape from contents clearly and easily legible, is influenced by area available and exploits all the environmental potentials. The architectural project is divided into four main areas: the baths zone, the zone services, the basement and the outer area. The area of the baths includes two tanks, the warehouse and the emergency room. The entrance zone-services includes the entrance hall with the ticket office, a room for the administration and management, a room for meetings and conferences, two services for administrative staff and for external audiences, changing rooms for male and female instructors, the area changing facilities for personnel with separate access from North, and the two areas for changing, divided between males and females, both equipped with area of change footwear, changing room, showers and toilets. The link to the baths zone take place through the obliged path. All the features described are connected by a bright corridor. The natural lighting in all the rooms takes place from the windows located in high and oriented to the South. To the North is placed a small porch to protection the wall and of the entrance of the technical personnel of maintenance and cleaning. The gross floor area of the services described, including compass of entrance, is mq 673. The basement has gross surface equal at the covered area of the baths and of the services described. In it are placed all installations for the ground plan, including those for the air conditioning, the treatment of the water of the baths, and the heat recovering. The external area includes some parking spaces along the West side, a green area along the East side perimeter, the scale and the external access to the basement and, to the South, an area partly paved and partly of green grass, used in the summer and the solarium. The arrangement of the building uses the direct solar radiation for heating and lighting, in a natural way, of all the rooms of the swimming pool in winter. The Orientation South of the window allows to control of the natural light and the overheating in the summer. A considerable thickness of heat insulation of the perimeter walls, over the coverage and on the floor, reduces a lot the lost of the heat for conduction. The windows made of laminated wood and painted with white color, are equipped with triple glass with argon gas and treatment low emissive and with high solar factor. The vertical structures and of cover are heavy (concrete) with functions of thermal accumulation. Externally at the windows of swimming pool are placed fixed shade, designed to reduce the solar gain in summer and to get in the winter the maximum insulation. These measures of sustainability, provide a significant reduction of energy consumption. The use of heat pumps for heating environment, avoids the construction of a conventional thermal power plant and everything works with electricity. The basement is an important area of accumulation of heat from the air of expulsion from the rooms of the top, that in the basement transits, before final discharge, from all electric machines installed therein, and from the ground below, and is an important area also for heat transfer at the air entered. Innovation and transferability – Progress Despite the sensitive and complex issue of air-conditioning and energy saving in a pool, the draft adopts systems simple of internal climate control. It uses many efficient passive design mechanisms instead of conventional systems. It is a visually intriguing piece of architecture with symbolic power, it serves its purpose fully by providing attractive and functional spaces. It develops the environmental awareness of the occupants (passive building, active people), the landscaping enriches the local ecosystem. Considered individually, these are not amazing design feats, but considered together (holistic approach), the way the building looks and works is a radical departure from the norm. Although some aspects of the design apply specifically to the temperate climate, many aspects can be easily transferred around the world. The concepts employed are affordable, easy to understand, and practical to realize. Ethical standards and social equity – People The construction criteria, the sustainable results, the ability to achieve a zero energy consumption, of this construction, can be a very good example to follow for new construction: residential, tertiary and sports. A sustainable transformation of existing city and of new construction can be achieved by applying the concepts of this project. It is clear the great social usefulness of these objectives, when developed widely, in terms of well-being of the environment and, thereby, of good healthy physical (and mental). The educational function of this project is another important social function, especially in areas where we have lost the close relationship between the city, the buildings and the nature. The construction achieved in traditional way is made using local workers. Environmental quality and resource efficiency – Planet The materials of construction are made locally (concrete, wood). Thanks at the use of solar energy direct, we have a very low consumption of energy (in total minus of 50 kwh/sqm year). Low costs of maintenance of all the technological plants, thanks at the simple and clear design. If we provide the energy electric (80000 kwh/yar) from the photovoltaic panels, we can reach the self-sufficiency energy. Long life of the building thanks to the clever design and at the accurate construction. Economic performance and compatibility – Prosperity The traditional constructive arrangements enhance the local work. Raw materials, semi-manufactured and finished components come from the territory (gravel, concrete, windows, panels, ceramics, technological systems). The financings come from subsequent cash (the tickets of the customers), which are secure, also thanks at the low operating costs and maintenance. Contextual and aesthetic impact – Proficiency The orientation, the architectural form and the intelligent use of construction materials, transmit deep messages to the landscape and to the surrounding buildings, which can retrieve the quality currently non-existent. The next new buildings can follow the concepts of this example and further improve, on sustainable way the environment. Dr. engineer Giorgio Bedin - Montebelluna Treviso Italy
