A Room for London

There can be few places to stay a night in London quite as unusual, poetic and life-enhancing as Living Architecture's newest building: a 'boat' perched, as if by retreating floodwaters, on the very edge of the Queen Elizabeth hall at the Southbank Centre.

The one-bedroom installation, designed by David Kohn Architects and artist Fiona Banner, will stay on top of the roof throughout 2012 and is intended to offer guests a place of refuge and reflection amidst the flow of traffic at this iconic location in the capital. The lower and upper decks offer extraordinary views, by day and night, of a London panorama that stretches from Big Ben to St Paul's cathedral. Inside, the boat is a beautifully crafted timber object, full of nooks and crannies to explore – and all the creature comforts that one would expect in a good hotel.

On arrival 'aboard', guests will be invited to fill in a logbook detailing what they have experienced during their stay, out of the window as much as within themselves. This is contemporary architecture at its most playful, beguiling and thought-provoking.

In future years, expect that the boat will resume its journey and find itself perched in other vital parts of the capital.


A Londra il duo composto dall’architetto David Kohn e dall’artista Fiona Banner ha vinto il concorso di progettazione “A Room for London” per la realizzazione di una struttura temporanea da installare in cima alla Queen Elizabeth Hall, nel Southbank Centre.
Per festeggiare i Giochi Olimpici e Paraolimpici 2012 (in corso dal 27 luglio al 12 agosto 2012 nella capitale britannica) il volume, situato in uno dei luoghi più visitati e riconoscibili della città, accoglierà due persone alla volta, che potranno alloggiare e passare la notte in una location unica al mondo, con vista sul Tamigi e sulla Cattedrale di Saint Paul.
Kohn e Banner hanno immaginato “un’imbarcazione in legno, attraccata sul tetto della Queen Elizabeth Hall, per riposare, atterrata, forse, dalle vicine acque del Tamigi in ritirata”. Le prenotazioni si apriranno on-line dall'8 settembre 2011.
Ad accogliere i visitatori, una volta arrivati a "a bordo", una bandiera nautica innalzata per segnalare l'avvenuta occupazione del piccolo vascello. Sul ponte della barca, gli ospiti potranno poi compilare un registro indicando ciò che hanno sperimentato durante il loro soggiorno, nel fruire di uno spazio talmente insolito. Le prenotazioni si apriranno on-line dall'8 settembre 2011.
Oltre ad ospitare le coppie che avranno prenotato lo spazio per una notte, il volume ospiterà un programma speciale di incontri con artisti, scrittori e commentatori culturali. Questi ' thinkers-in-residence’ potranno tenere un giornale di bordo o creare opere d’arte comunicando tutto questo online o in diretta web dalla struttura. Alcuni contributi saranno immediatamente mostrati al pubblico, altri verranno sviluppati lentamente nel corso dell'anno. A tutti i visitatori sarà offerta la possibilità di condividere le esperienze di una notte nella struttura.
