The brief called for the refurbishment of the historical ex-hospital of Sant’Andrea into the new public and University libraries, and the creation of new classrooms and a new Auditorium to improve the facilities of the existing University in the complex. The primary goal was to create a well-connected network between all these new buildings and the existing University facilities. Covered walkways are the key elements to establish a good connection with all the new functions of the complex. The blocks of the new Auditorium and new classrooms are positioned on the site so as they don’t block the view of the historical Pavilion. Their architectural character is inspired by the existing walls around them, and it’s kept simple so as not to overpower the historical buildings. They are dimensioned and positioned on the site carefully, to allow future expansion of the University.
