Il futuristico concept architettonico è rappresentativo dell’attività della Actelion orientata al futuro. L'edificio combina funzionalità e creatività, offrendo ai dipendenti un ambiente di lavoro stimolante e che favorisca la comunicazione.

Il concetto architettonico si ispira al tema di fondo della comunicazione. La costruzione angolare, aperta, in acciaio è costituita da supporti sovrapposti gli uni agli altri. Ogni piano è organizzato in modo diverso. Questo principio fondamentale si basa su una rigorosa regolarità: nei quattro punti d'angolo, dove le “travi degli uffici” si incontrano, vi sono le zone centrali attraverso le quali è previsto l'accesso a tutto l'edificio. Qui, ascensori e scale collegano fra loro i vari piani dando luogo a zone di comunicazione naturale, dove si intersecano i percorsi degli impiegati. In queste zone ci sono le cucine, le sale riunioni, le aule per i corsi e zone conversazione che invitano le persone a sedersi e scambiare idee. Le facciate in vetro permettono la comunicazione attraverso il contatto visivo e sottolineano la trasparenza, sia verso l'interno che verso l'esterno, così come verso l'alto e verso il basso.
Per garantire che questa “apertura” sia coerente in ogni parte dell’edificio, tutti gli impianti sono stati installati a pavimento e a soffitto e si è deciso di evitare condotte e tubazioni a parete.

La struttura portante dell’edificio è costituita da quasi 4 chilometri di telai in acciaio. Complessivamente sono state lavorate circa 2.500 tonnellate di acciaio. Le barre che compongono l’armatura sono rettilinee, a forma di K o di X, a seconda delle esigenze statiche. Per ragioni di sicurezza antincendio, la costruzione d'acciaio è stata intonacata e dipinta di bianco e in tal modo, gli elementi caratteristici in acciaio, sottolineano la chiara identità visiva dell'edificio.

Il verde è stato curato dal landscape designer Tita Giese che utilizza all'interno dell'edificio tappeti di felci, edera, palme e Anthurias confondendo i confini tra interno ed esterno. Nelle zone più soleggiate sui tetti è stata piantata l’erba della prateria, che cambia nel corso delle stagioni, dal verde chiaro al rosso scuro, mantenendo quest’ultima tonalità per tutto l’inverno. Le altre coperture sono state ricoperte con piante che crescono a seconda delle condizioni climatiche alternate a zone di ghiaia.

Il concept energetico dell'edificio si basa sull'uso combinato di elettricità, gas naturale ed energie rinnovabili sotto forma di energia solare. L'obiettivo è di soddisfare la domanda di riscaldamento e di raffrescamento in un modo che si conservino le risorse e che sia in larga misura carbon neutral. Gli elementi essenziali sono:
• tripli vetri alle finestre degli uffici che offrono un alto grado di isolamento. Tra i due vetri più esterni vi sono di feritoie per la protezione solare che si adattano automaticamente in funzione della posizione del sole, ma che possono anche essere controllate manualmente dal personale. Le facciate in vetro sono state progettate in modo tale che le superfici esposte ai piani superiori siano inclinate verso il basso e le superfici ombreggiate ai piani inferiori lo siano verso l'alto, al fine di ridurre l’irraggiamento;
• celle fotovoltaiche di supporto alla tecnologia per la produzione di energia;
• thermal activation of the solid ceilings;
• distribuzione di calore controllabile in ogni singolo ufficio.


The Actelion Business Center is the heart of the Actelion Center in Allschwil, Switzerland. It offers 350 offices for employees from central functions.
The building, a creation of the Basel architects’ office of Herzog & de Meuron, stands for innovation and openness and thus stands for the core values of Actelion. The futuristic architectural concept symbolizes the company's future-oriented business activity. The building combines functionality and creativity. It offers employees an inspiring working environment that fosters communication.

Communication as an underlying theme
The architectural concept is guided by the underlying theme of communication. The open, angular steel construction consists of supports stacked on top of each other. Every floor is laid out differently. This fundamental principle is based on a strict regularity: in the four corner points, where the “office beams” meet, are the core zones through which access is provided to the whole building. Here, elevators and stairs link the various floors with each other. This gives rise to natural communication zones where employees' paths cross. In these zones there are kitchens, meeting rooms and training rooms. Seating islands invite people to sit down and exchange ideas.
The glass facades allow communication through eye contact and underline the transparency, both inwards and outwards, as well as upwards and downwards. To ensure that this openness is consistent throughout, all installations were laid in the floors and ceilings, and it was decided to avoid any ducts and piping in walls.
Steel construction as an architectural
The load-bearing structure of the building consists of steel frames measuring a total of 3.8 kilometers in length. Altogether about 2’500 tons of steel were processed. The steel bars that make up the framework are straight, K-shaped or X-shaped, depending on the static requirements. For fire safety reasons, the steel construction is plastered and painted white. In this way, the characteristic steel elements underline the light visual identity of the building.
The art of botany
The greening concept of botanical artist Tita Giese takes up the transparency of the building. There is a mix of various kinds of ivy and horsetail in the shaded outdoor zones around the entrance area. Inside the building are three carpets of ferns, ivy, low-growing palms and Anthurias that spread outdoors, thus blurring the boundary between inside and outside.
In sunny areas the roofs are planted with prairie grass, which changes in the course of the seasons from light green to dark red, retaining this color in the winter. The other roof areas were provided with a plant substrate that grows independently according to climatic conditions. Depending on the sun and rainfall, a low-growing carpet of stonecrops alternate with unplanted gravel areas.
Energy concept
The energy concept of the building is based on the combined use of electricity, natural gas and renewable energy in the form of solar power. The aim is to meet the demand for heating and cooling in a way that conserves resources and is largely carbon neutral.
