Villa Medici Re-enchanted

Launched in 2022, the refurbishment program Re-enchanting Villa Medici enters a new phase in 2025 with the unveiling of six guest rooms and two citrus gardens redesigned in a spirit of dialogue between heritage and contemporary creation.

Following the refurbishment of the reception salons at Villa Medici by Kim Jones and Silvia Venturini Fendi in 2022 and the historic rooms by India Mahdavi in 2023, this new chapter of the re-enchantment brings together the vision of architects, designers, landscape planners, craft professionals, and contemporary artists.

Accordingly, each of the six guest rooms has been entrusted to a team of architects and designers working in close collaboration with arts and crafts professionals:

Selected through competition, the teams infuse the rooms with a new contemporary spirit, transforming a stay at Villa Medici into a unique experience where Roman inspirations interwine with references to the Villa’s Renaissance heritage.

Outside, the redesign of the lemon garden is the work of Landscape architect Bas Smets, in collaboration with Pierre-Antoine Gatier, chief architect of historical monuments. Their intervention seeks to enhance Ferdinando de’ Medici’s secret garden, with its panoramic view over Rome and its iconic lemon trees. On this occasion, the new Cosimo de’ Medici outdoor furniture line, inspired by the garden, was specially created by the design duo Muller Van Severen and produced by Tectona.

In front of Villa Medici’s theatrical façade with its Serlian loggia, the parterre garden, which extends right up to the Aurelian Wall, has also been redesigned. Reviving the heritage of Ferdinando de’ Medici and his passion for citrus fruits, twenty lemon trees, selected from historical varieties, are arranged in a scenography that highlights the work of ceramic artist Natsuko Uchino and poet Laura Vazquez. Invited to design the decoration of the pots, Natsuko Uchino created a series of unique pieces that blend contemporary gestures with Tuscan artisanal traditions. Laura Vazquez, a fellow of Villa Medici and winner of the 2023 Prix Goncourt for Poetry, contributed a poem consisting of 20 words engraved on the stone bases.

This new phase of the Re-enchanting Villa Medici program continues the commitment of the French Academy in Rome to creation, research, and experimentation in the sphere of the arts and of expertise at the highest level. It contributes to a renewed connection with the place and its history, in an ongoing dialogue with the interventions of its predecessors: those of Ferdinando de’ Medici and his architect Bartolomeo Ammannati in the sixteenth century, Horace Vernet and Ingres in the nineteenth century, Balthus in the 1960s, Richard Peduzzi in the early 2000s and Claudio Parmiggiani in 2015. Inhabited by the spirit of the Renaissance, Villa Medici asserts itself as a living body imbued with contemporaneity.

Six teams of architects, designers, and contemporary artists, in association with arts and crafts professionals, were selected to rethink the layout of six guest rooms located in the south wing of Villa Medici. The refurbishment of the rooms is an opportunity to highlight a variety of exceptional craftsmanship in glass, metal, ceramics, wood, and plasterwork. The uniqueness of each room is reasserted: volumes are highlighted, surfaces sublimated (walls, floors), and the unitary coherence of each space emphasized. Most of the rooms, with an area of 40 m2 each, the rooms retain their original period structural elements: high coffered wooden ceilings, herringbone brick floors, double-leaf windows, and mezzanine.

The guest rooms have performed a variety of functions over the centuries. In the sixteenth century, when Cardinal Ferdinando de’ Medici had the building fitted out, these spaces were used as furniture storage. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, when Villa Medici became the seat of the French Academy in Rome, they were converted into studios/living quarters for the fellows, a role they retained for over two hundred years. A walkway was then added to facilitate access. For a long time this accommodation was assigned preferentially to painters because of its dual north- and south-facing exposure, which offered spectacular views both over Rome and of the interior façade of Villa Medici. Since 2009, these living spaces have been open for booking and they now accommodate short-term guests.

The refurbishment of the guest rooms has been carried out with the support of the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, a patron of the arts and crafts for 25 years and main partner of the project. Is also benefits from the support of the Banque Populaire Foundation, and
Maison Tréca.

Avviato nel 2022, il programma di riallestimento Restituire l’incanto a Villa Medici è entrato quest’anno  in una nuova fase con la presentazione di sei camere per gli ospiti e due giardini di agrumi riprogettati con l’intento di instaurare un dialogo tra patrimonio storico e creazione contemporanea.

Dopo il riallestimento dei saloni di rappresentanza di Villa Medici a cura di Kim Jones e Silvia Venturini Fendi, nel 2022, e delle camere storiche a cura di India Mahdavi, nel 2023, il nuovo capitolo del riallestimento di Villa Medici coinvolge architetti, designer, paesaggisti, professionisti dell’artigianato e artisti contemporanei.

Ciascuna delle sei camere per gli ospiti è stata affidata a un team di architetti e designer che lavorano in stretta collaborazione con professionisti dell’artigianato:

Selezionati sulla base di un concorso, i team incaricati hanno infuso nelle camere un’atmosfera contemporanea, trasformando il soggiorno a Villa Medici in un’esperienza unica, in cui le influenze romane si mescolano con i richiami al patrimonio rinascimentale della Villa.

All’esterno, il giardino dei limoni è stato ridisegnato da Bas Smets, architetto del Paesaggio, in collaborazione con Pierre-Antoine Gatier, architetto capo dei monumenti storici. Il loro intervento si concentra sulla valorizzazione del giardino segreto di Ferdinando de’ Medici, con la sua veduta panoramica su Roma e i suoi alberi di limone.
Per l’occasione, il duo di designer Muller Van Severen ha creato appositamente la nuova linea di mobili per esterni Cosimo de’ Medici, realizzata da Tectona, ispirata proprio al giardino.

Di fronte alla scenografica facciata di Villa Medici, con la sua loggia a serliane, è stato ripensato anche il giardino dei parterre, che si estende fino alle Mura Aureliane. In sintonia con l’eredità di Ferdinando de’ Medici e la sua passione per gli agrumi, in una scenografia che mette in risalto l’opera dell’artista ceramista Natsuko Uchino e della poetessa Laura Vazquez, sono stati inseriti venti alberi di limone, selezionati tra diverse varietà storiche. Natsuko Uchino è stata invitata a creare l'ornamentazione dei vasi, realizzando una serie di pezzi unici che uniscono il gesto contemporaneo alla tradizione artigianale toscana. Laura Vazquez, borsista a Villa Medici e vincitrice del Premio Goncourt per la Poesia nel 2023, ha invece creato una poesia di 20 parole incise nella pietra dei basamenti.

Questa nuova fase del programma Restituire l’incanto a Villa Medici prosegue l’impegno dell’Accademia di Francia nel promuovere la creazione, la ricerca e la sperimentazione nel campo dell’alto artigianato. Contribuisce ad aggiornare il nostro rapporto con il sito e la sua storia, in costante dialogo con l’opera dei predecessori: Ferdinando de’ Medici e il suo architetto Bartolomeo Ammannati nel XVI secolo, Horace Vernet e Ingres nel XIX secolo, Balthus negli anni sessanta, Richard Peduzzi nei primi anni duemila e Claudio Parmiggiani nel 2015. Permeata dello spirito del Rinascimento, Villa Medici si afferma come un luogo vivo attraversato dalla contemporaneità.

Sei team di architetti, designer e artisti contemporanei, associati a professionisti dell’artigianato, sono stati selezionati per riprogettare sei camere per gli ospiti nell’ala sud di Villa Medici. Il nuovo allestimento delle camere è un’opportunità per mostrare un’ampia gamma di competenze eccezionali nella lavorazione del vetro, del metallo, della ceramica, del legno e del rivestimento murale. L’intervento ha riaffermato l’unicità di ogni stanza attraverso la valorizzazione dei volumi, la nobilitazione delle superfici (pareti, pavimenti) e l’accentuazione della coerenza di ogni spazio. Le camere, la maggior parte con una superficie di circa 40 metri quadri, conservano le caratteristiche strutturali dell’epoca: alti soffitti a cassettoni in legno, pavimenti in mattoni a spina di pesce, finestre a doppia anta e un soppalco.

Nel corso dei secoli, le camere degli ospiti sono state utilizzate per diversi scopi. Nel XVI secolo, quando il cardinale Ferdinando de’ Medici fece risistemare l’edificio, le stanze furono utilizzate come magazzini. All’inizio del XIX secolo, quando Villa Medici divenne la sede dell’Accademia di Francia a Roma, furono trasformate in alloggi per i borsisti, funzione che mantennero per oltre duecento anni. Per facilitare l’accesso alle stanze fu aggiunta una passerella. Per molto tempo i pittori hanno avuto accesso prioritario a questi appartamenti grazie alla loro doppia esposizione nord-sud, che offre una vista spettacolare su Roma e sulla facciata interna di Villa Medici. Dal 2009 questi spazi abitativi sono aperti alle prenotazioni e accolgono gli ospiti di passaggio in città.

Il riallestimento delle camere è stato possibile grazie al sostegno della Fondazione Bettencourt Schueller, mecenate dell’artigianato d’eccellenza da 25 anni e grande partner del progetto. Beneficia inoltre del sostegno della Fondazione Banque Populaire e della Maison Tréca.
