A historic church becomes a futuristic medical practice in the heart of Vienna Vienna / Austria / 2025
A visionary architectural project has transformed a historic church in the heart of Vienna into a groundbreaking, futuristic medical practice. At the center of the church - where pews once stood - two mirrored aluminum boxes now serve as treatment rooms. The former confessional has been reimagined as an exclusive beauty room, and the altar area now functions as the reception. Extensive structural modifications were required to convert the 1860s church into a state-of-the-art medical facility.
This project bridges past and future, setting a new benchmark for architectural innovation in the healthcare sector. It merges sacred and futuristic design, preserving the historical integrity of the church while seamlessly incorporating contemporary design elements. The mirrored aluminum treatment rooms reflect cutting-edge technology, while the thoughtful use of advanced materials and forms ensures a modern yet respectful transformation.
The design cleverly balances the functional demands of a medical practice with the unique characteristics of the church. Treatment rooms, a beauty room, and the reception area are intelligently arranged to optimize workflow and efficiency. Structural changes such as skylights and a glass sliding door maximize natural light and create a welcoming atmosphere. The result is a highly functional space that still retains a tangible connection to its past.
The project creatively fuses two contrasting elements—sacred architecture and futuristic design—into a cohesive concept. Repurposing the altar, confessional, and pews for medical use, and incorporating modern materials such as polished aluminum and mirrors, reflects an innovative approach to spatial transformation. The inclusion of natural elements, such as a water feature, further enhances the visionary character of the design.
By blending innovation, heritage conservation, and social responsibility, this transformation sets a new standard in architecture and serves as a unique model for integrating old and new in public spaces.
