Architectural Approach

The architectural design of this top-floor apartment in Keratsini is centered on creating a warm and functional living space where every design element reflects the residents' personalities. Instead of following a sterile, standardized aesthetic often seen in contemporary interiors, the design embraces uniqueness through the use of natural materials, deliberate contrasts, and the seamless integration of structural elements into the design narrative. The space blends an industrial-chic character with elements of contemporary minimalism, resulting in a balanced and refined environment.

Main Living Area

Entry to the apartment is through the central stairwell, leading into an open-plan space that includes the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The design seeks a balance between warmth and contemporary minimalism, with extensive use of wood flooring and furniture combined with earthy tones and clean white surfaces.

The living area features a minimal aesthetic with a palette of earthy hues. Black is used as an accent, highlighting select elements such as the custom-designed bookshelf and coffee table, which create a dynamic contrast against the neutral backdrop of natural materials like wood and linen upholstery. Both the bookshelf and coffee table, creations by Giorgos Haidopoulos, lend the space a sense of individuality. Special attention was given to surface treatments, such as the sandblasting of the table and countertop surfaces, to achieve a natural and curated imperfection.

Industrial touches are visible in the metal bookshelf, the coffee table’s metal frame, and the Tolix-style chairs, juxtaposed against warm, organic materials. Lighting played a primary, not supplementary, role in the design. Each area is equipped with different lighting scenarios to meet functional needs and enhance the desired atmosphere. Linear lighting, pendant fixtures above the dining table, and concealed lighting were thoughtfully combined to accentuate the architectural lines and material textures.

The kitchen area stands out through its strong color contrasts: black cabinetry paired with white Corian countertops clearly delineates the cooking zone from the dining area. An existing beam above the window, originally a structural limitation, was embraced and transformed into an integral design feature.

Spatial Layout and Organization

The apartment's layout prioritizes both comfort and privacy. On one side is the master bedroom with an en suite bathroom and a walk-in closet; on the opposite side are two smaller bedrooms and a shared bathroom, each room with its own private balcony.

The design philosophy of the bedrooms mirrors that of the main living area. The master bedroom is conceived as a serene retreat, combining soft gray and off-white walls with a dark gray bed frame. The en suite bathroom offers a surprising design element: a black ceiling that adds dramatic contrast and a sense of depth.

The two children’s bedrooms are tailored to the age and personalities of their young occupants. One room is infused with vibrant greens and yellows, radiating energy, while the other adopts neutral tones to create a more tranquil atmosphere. Special emphasis was placed on integrating existing columns and beams within both rooms and maximizing storage space. The study and rest areas are defined by subtle color variations, supported by flexible lighting scenarios that allow the children to personalize their environment. Inspirational quotes on the walls aim to boost their confidence and celebrate their individuality.

Bathroom Design

The two bathrooms follow a consistent design language, differentiated mainly through color choices. Ceramic tiles with patterns reminiscent of vintage mosaics, large mirrors, and classic white porcelain fixtures create a timeless backdrop. In the master bathroom, soft terracotta tones pair with dark cabinetry for a warm, earthy feel. In the children’s bathroom, the client's wish for a lively, colorful space was fully realized: a bright yellow dominates the room, while a deep blue around the shower area adds a bold, playful contrast. Color choices were intentionally made to foster a joyful and stimulating environment for the children.

Functionality and Sustainability

The design process emphasized both ergonomics and sustainability. Despite the challenges posed by pre-existing structural elements like beams and columns, they were seamlessly incorporated into the overall aesthetic.

The need for ample storage was a key driver throughout the project. Smart storage solutions were integrated into every room, from the kitchen and living area to the bedrooms and bathrooms. In particular, the kitchen cabinetry was designed to maximize utility, while hidden storage spaces were created in the children's rooms for toys and books.

Moreover, the apartment meets modern energy standards. It features autonomous heating via a heat pump, an energy-efficient fireplace, and energy-saving windows and external insulation, all of which contribute to a reduced environmental footprint.

Conclusion

This top-floor apartment is more than just a contemporary residence; it is a space imbued with character and identity. Through the careful selection of materials, the thoughtful use of contrasts, and the respectful integration of structural elements, a design was achieved that transcends fleeting trends to genuinely reflect the lifestyle of its inhabitants.

The design was not solely about achieving visual perfection, but about connecting the space with the rhythms of everyday life. It is a warm, functional, and sustainable home where every element has been crafted to serve its residents without compromising on aesthetic value.

During the photoshoot, a conscious decision was made to avoid presenting a flawless, "sterile" space. Instead, the goal was to capture the authentic spirit of a lived-in home. Personal belongings were left in place, and the beds were not meticulously styled. The space carries the soul of its residents — and it was essential to portray it truthfully, without an artificial gloss.
