Reconstruction of Cabin on the border of Slovakia and Czech Republic:

A Study in Spatial Efficiency and Materiality

This project involves the careful reconstruction of a cabin in Zahorie, designed to adhere to the regional architectural guidelines while introducing a series of spatial and material interventions. The objective was to enhance the functionality of the interior while preserving the integrity of the exterior, creating a balance between contemporary needs and local tradition.

The cabin's facade was updated with a restrained facelift that respects the design manual of the surrounding environment. The changes were kept subtle, reinforcing the existing character of the cabin while integrating modern elements that contribute to its overall functionality.

The core of the design challenge was the reconfiguration of the interior layout. The primary focus was on the transformation of the terrace and optimizing the spatial flow. By reducing the size of one room, the design allowed for the relocation of the bathroom to the second floor (2NP) within the night zone, addressing the previous absence of this essential function in the upper portion of the building. This adjustment freed up space on the first floor, which was then allocated for a living room and kitchen — spaces that had been notably lacking. The result was a reorganization that divided the cabin into three distinct volumetric sections, each with its own clear spatial identity. These volumes can be independently insulated from one another, offering flexibility for future adjustments in climate control or use.

Externally, a simple pergola structure was added, composed of three key components. The design incorporates galvanized steel columns with semicircular arches on each side, creating a refined yet structural aesthetic. Steel I-beams serve as the supporting framework, while the roof is constructed from locally-sourced burnt wood, mirroring the materiality of the cabin's facade. The roof structure itself is broken, allowing for a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.

A key architectural feature is the circular skylight embedded within the pergola’s roof. This opening serves a dual purpose: it illuminates the pergola below, enhancing the quality of outdoor space, while also providing natural light to the interior, fostering a stronger connection between the cabin’s interior and exterior environments.

In this reconstruction, the project successfully merges modern spatial solutions with local materiality, offering a refined architectural response to the functional demands of contemporary living within a traditional framework.
