Hither & Yon | shell+core

Hither & Yon is a quirky community café in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Nestled within a retro-fitted, long-standing landmark building, the café is a thoughtful uplift of a timeless 70’s structure. Curves are introduced to soften the existing architectural elements, while bold, eclectic objects breathe life into forgotten corners, creating a playful yet welcoming atmosphere. 

Upon entering, guests are greeted by a monumental open area that seamlessly combines different zones, designed to cater to a diverse audience. The space is broken up into smaller ‘districts’ - informal corners, cozy reading nooks, and various seating options that invite guests to settle in, whether alone or with friends. The combination of abundant natural light streaming through the high bay windows, vibrant colors framing distinct features, and a carefully curated selection of objects creates a home-grown community setting. 

The café creates a sense of connection by framing views both into and out of the space, encouraging verbal and physical encounters among guests. Seating is shared, conversations flow freely, and the atmosphere is one of casual, easygoing community. Hither & Yon references a vibrant, energetic injection into an otherwise corporate context. 

The café’s design is built around flexibility, with modular seating arrangements scattered throughout the space to create adaptable environments. These areas are designed to cater to different needs of visitors, whether for a quick coffee, a quiet moment with a book, or to gather with friends. Each zone serves a different purpose, encouraging social interaction and quiet contemplation alike. 

Hither & Yon also brings a touch of global flair with its retail sections, where hand-picked objects from around the world are strategically displayed across the space, and provide a peak into the owner’s life - almost like a public living room. These curated pieces add to the eclectic setting, transforming the café into a public parlor come neighborhood hub where locals and passersby alike can unwind, relax, and enjoy a sense of belonging.
