Casa do Sul | Nuno Nascimento
Aljezur / Portugal / 2024
Casa do Sul is a traditional home, both in form and construction. Designed as a holiday retreat, it prioritizes comfort while meeting the essential needs of its purpose, blending practicality with charm.
The house follows an L-shaped layout, separating private and social areas. It includes four en-suite bedrooms and an open-plan social space combining living, dining, and kitchen areas. The design emphasizes social interaction, with the bedrooms kept minimal to highlight the expansive common area, encouraging shared moments and a sense of togetherness.
Additional features include an open kitchen that extends to an outdoor dining space and a pool oriented toward the house’s scenic views, creating a perfect space for relaxation and leisure. A standout element is the exterior entrance hall, which incorporates a small tank for rinsing feet or surfboards after a day at the beach. This detail nods to the traditional water features of Alentejo homes, offering a refreshing shaded transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The materials were deliberately kept simple and locally sourced, reflecting the limited resources of the region and the constraints of a modest budget, while maintaining an authentic aesthetic.
Casa do Sul embraces simplicity, functionality, and beauty, mirroring the laid-back lifestyle and natural surroundings of Aljezur.
