RESIDENCE J | Nayra Iglesias
Art and design come together in this complete renovation of a home for a young and sophisticated client. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria / Spain / 2024
In Out Studio takes on residential design once again with a project that transforms a classic 1970s apartment into a modern refuge brimming with art and refinement.
The client’s goal was to turn his first home into a spacious and fluid haven for living, working, and entertaining. To achieve this, he purchased a 160 m² apartment built in the 1970s, whose original layout did not meet his needs. The solution was to demolish all partitions and reimagine the home from scratch.
Integrated Spaces and a Striking Guest Bathroom: A Bold Style Statement
The primary “must-have” of the project was to create an open space. This was achieved by integrating a 70 m² area comprising the living room, dining room, and kitchen, with a cozy reading nook. This central space redefines social interaction, allowing conversations to flow seamlessly throughout the home, breaking down barriers, and strengthening personal connections.
The vibrant multifunctional heart of the home is concentrated in the living and dining area. Upon entering, the kitchen greets visitors with a nearly 3-meter-long porcelain island, serving as the visual centerpiece of the space and the perfect spot for sharing unforgettable moments. The chosen materials for the kitchen include marble-finished black and white countertops, ultra-matte taupe lacquered panels, and dark walnut wood, offering a timeless and sophisticated visual interplay. Opposite to the kitchen is the dining area, framed by a curved wall that gathers the space while concealing the home’s best-kept secret: custom floor-to-ceiling concealed doors designed by the studio. These doors hide the master suite, guest bedroom, and powder room.
Incorporating the importance of art into the project, Nayra Iglesias chose the work Abstract Mickey Evo 1 by Gabriele Serrini for this area. Its vibrant colors and expressiveness create a dialogue between the classic space and the artistic element.
Style and Comfort in Perfect Harmony
Next to the large windows that flood the home with natural light, the living room and office share the same open space as the dining area and kitchen, yet each maintains a distinct identity. The central area, featuring a spacious nude chaise longue sofa and a custom plush rug, is accented with golden and metallic details, adding warmth to the atmosphere. In the farthest corner, a reading nook boasts a custom wooden and glass bookcase crafted by local artisans.
A Guest Bathroom That Surprises: Rebellion and Elegance in Black and White
The owner envisioned a guest bathroom that would be “bold, daring, and surprising.” This space introduces the first touch of rebellion, breaking from the neutral and classic aesthetic with a more inspiring and audacious style characteristic of the studio. The room employs a black-and-white palette with abstract forms. The highlight of this space is the sink area, featuring a striking custom vanity made of marble and wood, with a full-height backlit black mirror that adds depth and impact. It’s a delightful surprise for guests.
From Social to Private: The Master Bedroom as a Space of Luxury and Personalized Design
The open-space concept extends to the master suite, divided into three areas: a sleeping area, a bathroom, and a walk-in closet, all characterized by warm finishes and serene lines. The centerpiece of the bedroom is an oversized custom headboard and bedside tables made from noble materials like marble, brass, and wood.
A subtly curved ceiling frames the bathroom and closet areas. The walk-in closet continues the project’s bronze-toned palette with chocolate-lacquered wood and smoked glass, adding a theatrical touch. Leveraging their expertise in hotel design, In Out Studio created a completely open bathroom that features a minimalist bronze-tinted glass shower and a monolithic sand toned acrylic sink. The suspended wooden vanity and Onyx fixtures add the finishing touches.
Guest Bedroom: A Chic Refuge of Sensuality and Contrasts
Hidden behind the grooved paneling with floor-to-ceiling doors lies the guest bedroom. With a delicate and chic character, ochre and gold tones infuse the space with sensorial richness. An exquisite wallpaper with golden botanical motifs stands out. The bedside tables break the room's neutrality with their bold colors and sculptural forms, adding a dynamic contrast.
A Home That Redefines Modern Living
In Out Studio’s project reimagines residential design by blending functionality, sophistication, and creativity in every corner. With meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of the owner's needs, the home becomes a unique experience that transcends convention. Each space balances social and private living, creating a home that is not only practical but also emotionally resonant through its design. The aesthetic details and innovative material choices inspire and welcome in equal measure. With this project, In Out Studio proves that design can transcend traditional boundaries, creating homes where functionality and art merge to deliver a lifestyle full of beauty, personality, and emotion.
