The Kaneria family, a family of four, aspired to craft a home that truly reflected their roots and lifestyle. Mr. Mayur Kaneria, an IT entrepreneur, lives with his wife Anita, their daughter, and his mother. The Gujarati couple, with the husband hailing from Saurashtra and the wife from Hyderabad, both deeply cherish their cultural traditions and values minimal furniture for a simple, clutter-free living environment.
When they approached us to design their newly purchased home in the "City of Bridges," they expressed a strong desire for an interior that exuded calmness and relaxation. Surrounded by serene farmland offering lush green views, the location itself inspired a connection to nature. We envisioned their space through the lens of minimalism, focusing on natural materials to emphasize sustainability and eco-friendliness while staying true to their lifestyle and traditions.
During conversations with the client there is a question that lingers in my mind that how can we create home that exudes calmness, serenity, and relaxation for someone returning after a long, tiring day? Inspired by this thought, the material palette was centered around natural elements like cane, bamboo mat, and white oak wood. To complement this, the color scheme was carefully curated, featuring a soothing beige base accented with earthy tones such as terracotta, green, and blue, adding depth and warmth to the space while staying true to the design principles.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Gujarati homes, the design incorporates a classic living room layout centered around a jhula (swing), a cherished element for the client’s mother, who enjoys spending her time on it during daily chores. Strategically positioned, the jhula defines the circulation path, subtly separates the living room and kitchen, and fosters a seamless connection between the spaces, maintaining a sense of openness and dialogue.
The residence features three uniquely designed bedrooms, each tailored to meet the needs of its occupants. The master bedroom emphasizes natural materials, with cupboard shutters crafted from wood and cane and a bamboo mat ceiling, departing from conventional POP designs. Soft, diffuse lighting from the ceiling enhances the room's calm and inviting atmosphere without harsh glare. The daughter’s bedroom reflects her love for modernism. The wardrobe, crafted with fluted glass panel shutters, offers a blurred glimpse inside, adding a playful element while concealing clutter. Indirect lighting enhances nighttime usability. The sliding panels are designed allowing for flexible light control, providing adjustable sunlight when desired or darkening the room as needed. The third bedroom is designed for versatility. A foldable bed accommodates guests when required, while the space easily transforms into a home office or reading nook. An Indian-style seating arrangement creates a cozy corner, perfect for relaxation.
The ceilings of the semi-private spaces blend curves and straight lines, creating a harmonious design. Straight, longitudinal lines in the circulation areas enhance the sense of depth, while the
curves add a touch of softness and flow. Indirect lighting is thoughtfully incorporated to create a cozy ambiance at night, perfect for enjoying family time.
The architect envisioned the residence as a sanctuary, a space that offers comfort and tranquility for every family member, no matter their daily routine. For someone returning home after a long, tiring day of work, the design aims to provide an immediate sense of relief and calmness, allowing them to unwind and recharge. For a family member spending the entire day at home, the interiors are crafted to maintain a serene, welcoming environment that fosters relaxation and positivity. Similarly, for a youngster returning from school, the home is designed to be a space where they can feel at ease, supported by an atmosphere of warmth and relaxation. Every element of the design, from the choice of natural materials and colors to the thoughtful lighting and functional layout, works together to create a space that embodies serenity and rejuvenation.
