Catalejo | Tololo Ugarte

Catalejo (spyglass) is an architectural work that arises from its context. Upon first encountering the terrain, a point of interest was immediately evident: a kind of oasis consisting of four trees over 300 years old. The rest of the land presented itself as a very fertile pasture, highly sensitive to the seasons. In summer, it is a rather desert-like landscape; however, in winter and spring, meters of what is misleadingly called weeds sprout from the ground, flanking the house and making it float in an environment that, at ground level, is flat but where the vegetation provides an irregular and unexpected relief that mutates.

Having experienced this, it seemed that the house should, first and foremost, be elevated above the ground in such a way that the grass could grow beneath it, creating a green mantle that enhances the feeling of floating in this sort of vegetative lagoon.

It was also important to return to the first point of interest, which were the ancient quillay and molle trees, which, unlike the rest of the vegetation, constituted a monumental but motionless landscape of noble and perpetual character. This led to the decision to position the house facing these great living statues while maintaining a proper distance that, along with the double height and the vaulted ceiling, managed to capture 100% of the forest and bring it into the interior spaces.

The circular shape of the house ultimately allows the landscape to become an extension of the interior spaces, generating a sense of continuity. This architectural decision suggests that the natural environment is not merely a backdrop but an active element that redefines the perception of space.

The materials have been selected with a focus on visual mimesis, allowing the architecture to blend with its context. This choice aims to minimize the visual impact of the construction, integrating the work into the landscape.

In sum, Catalejo is not only a habitable space but also an architectural experiment that invites reflection on the interaction between human beings and nature. By bringing the landscape into the house, a constant dialogue is generated that transforms the experience of dwelling. The spaces become frames that define changing views, where each window acts as a lens that focuses and amplifies the natural environment, thus fostering a deeper awareness of the place in which one resides.

Catalejo es una obra de arquitectura que surge de su contexto. Al conocer el terreno por primera vez, era evidente un punto de interés: una especie de oasis de cuatro árboles de más de 300 años. Todo el resto del terreno se presentaba como un potrero muy fértil y sumamente sensible a las estaciones del año. En verano, es un paisaje bastante desértico; sin embargo, en invierno y primavera brotan desde el suelo metros de mal llamada maleza que flanquean la casa y la hacen flotar en un entorno que, a nivel de suelo, es plano, pero en donde la vegetación entrega un irregular e inesperado relieve que muta.

Experimentado esto, pareció ser que la casa debía, en primer lugar, estar suspendida del suelo de tal manera que la hierba creciera a modo de manto verde que potenciara la sensación de flotar en esta suerte de laguna vegetal. Así mismo, fue importante volver al primer punto de interés, que fueron los quillayes y molles añosos, que a diferencia del resto de la vegetación, constituían un paisaje monumental pero inmóvil, de carácter noble y perpetuo, lo que llevó a situar la casa mirando de frente a estas grandes estatuas vivientes y guardando una distancia justa que, junto con la doble altura y el techo abovedado, logró captar el 100% del bosque y llevarlo al interior de los recintos.

La forma circular de la casa permite, en definitiva, que el paisaje se convierta en una extensión de los espacios interiores, generando una sensación de continuidad. Esta decisión arquitectónica sugiere que el entorno natural no sea solo un telón de fondo, sino un elemento activo que redefine la percepción del espacio.

Los materiales han sido seleccionados con un enfoque en la mimesis visual, permitiendo que la arquitectura se fusione con su contexto. Esta elección busca minimizar el impacto visual de la construcción, integrando la obra en el paisaje.

En conjunto, Catalejo no solo es un espacio habitable, sino un experimento arquitectónico que invita a reflexionar sobre la interacción entre el ser humano y la naturaleza. Al traer el paisaje al interior de la casa, se genera un constante diálogo que transforma la experiencia de habitar. Los espacios se convierten en marcos que acotan vistas cambiantes, donde cada ventana se presenta como un lente que enfoca y amplifica el entorno natural, fomentando así una conciencia más profunda sobre el lugar en el que se habita.
